Art That Endures:

A Year in the MVT Photo Walk

When I first envisioned "BlackHair," it was designed for the quiet, white-walled sanctuary of a traditional gallery. But a year ago, I teamed up with my Mount Vernon Triangle CID friends, and we took 40 images into the world — literally—installing them outdoors at the MVT Photo Walk.

It was a gamble. It was also an incredible opportunity to see how the art would live where the people live.

I invite you to join me for a final reflection on this journey. My friend, Sandy Bellamy (Adjunct Professor at Howard University) will moderate the Art Talk as we explore the adaptation of this work for the public square, my art practice, future plans and the stories of joy and resilience.

Today, as we come full circle from one winter to the next, I am stunned by the results. These images have weathered record-breaking snow, freezing ice, the scorching DC summer heat, and torrential rains. Yet, they still look fantastic.

They have become a part of the neighborhood’s daily rhythm—discovered by passersby going about their lives, sparking wonderful conversations on the sidewalk, and proving that Black joy and beauty are as durable as they are vibrant.

Let’s celebrate art that meets the world where it is.

With gratitude,

Marvin Bowser

Washingtonians: The fabric of our City

The response to the Sapsucker video last week was incredible. It seems we all share an appreciation for the grit it takes to thrive in a DC winter!

That sense of resilience is exactly what inspired my latest apparel designs. In this city, identity is a badge of honor. Whether your roots go back generations or you’ve lived the DC experience long enough to claim your stripes, you are part of the fabric of this community.

I wanted to create something that salutes that journey—wherever you fall on the spectrum. This isn't just "merch"; it’s a way of saying "I see you" to the neighbors who make the District what it is.

The Essentials

If you’re looking for more than just a shirt, you can also browse the full collection of photography-inspired gear. Every piece is designed to celebrate our shared human experience.

Thank you for being part of this community (I claim you) and for supporting independent DC art.

With respect,

Marvin

A 20-second lesson in resilience from my backyard.

After the massive snowstorm we just had, the District felt completely still. But then, I heard it: a rhythmic, mechanical drumming echoing through the yard.

I grabbed my camera and found a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker hammering away at a Leyland Cypress in my backyard. It was loud, persistent, and a little jarring—until you saw the beauty of the bird against the pristine white snow.

I’ve put together a 20-second "Director's Cut" of this moment. It starts with the "jackhammer" and transitions into something more cinematic. Click here to enjoy the video! (https://youtube.com/shorts/R0Kt5Zhyboc?si=QvVDXIDmf1VZqQ_N)

The beautiful little woodpecker reminded me that even in the coldest seasons, there is work to be done and beauty to be found.

Stay warm, Marvin

A Stage for Every Story: Youth Artists from Wards 7 & 8 to Share Stage with Professional Performers in “Kaleidoscope of Hope” at Harman Hall.

Washington, DC — On Wednesday, June 12 at 7 PM, the historic Harman Hall will host an evening unlike any other: Kaleidoscope of Hope, a powerful multimedia performance featuring original poetry, music, and visual art created by youth from Washington, DC’s Wards 7 and 8, in collaboration with professional musicians and artists from across the region, uniting generations, backgrounds, and creative expressions.

The event is produced by Life Pieces To Masterpieces (LPTM), a free, community-rooted arts and mentoring program that has served Black and Brown boys and young men in DC for nearly 30 years. What makes this evening unique is not just the artistic excellence — it’s the rare and meaningful collaboration between youth who are often unseen in DC’s cultural spaces and professional artists who are helping to tell their story on one of the city’s most iconic stages. Through art, storytelling, and community ritual, Kaleidoscope of Hope highlights the brilliance and humanity of boys often left at the margins of DC’s cultural spotlight.
