Swain Domain

Swain Domain Bethany Swain is passionate about creating visual stories, using video, photos and more.

Bethany Swain is a nationally recognized photojournalist, multimedia producer and educator who spent most of her journalism career innovating at CNN. From Afghanistan to the presidential campaign trail, Bethany traveled thousands of miles for CNN as one of their only women photojournalists. She won dozens of awards during her 10 years working at the DC bureau, including the first (and only!) woman

‼ Now Hiring: Summer Interns, Shadows & Assistants

I, Bethany Swain, am looking for curious, reliable, and creative students to join me on visual storytelling projects this summer. From community events to behind-the-scenes shoots, you’ll get real-world experience in video, photography, and project support.

➡ Hybrid: most field work is around Annapolis. Lots that can be done virtually, too.
➡ Flexible hours — short-term and ongoing roles available.
➡ High school and college students are welcome (no experience required, just a positive attitude).
➡ Opportunities to get paid, too.

You’ll learn on the job, get coaching and feedback, and help tell powerful local stories. I only work on projects that have positive energy. Attitude is more important than skill level.

DM me or email [email protected] if you're interested or know a student who might be! More info at the link below.

One of the highlights of the annual Charting Careers Scholarship Night was this powerful poem "Still Here Pt. 2" by Senior Scholar Kalese Slade.

Charting Careers does such meaningful work supporting young people as they grow, lead, and imagine what’s possible. Jules Joyce Baquie and Bethany Swain were grateful to be there with Swain Domain to document the evening, debut the video from our spring Intro to Digital Storytelling workshop, and continue helping uplift this work through storytelling.

So much talent, heart, and hope in one room.

My long-time friend from CNN, Jim Acosta, hosted his first live town hall at the Lincoln Theatre in Washington D.C., creating a space for direct conversation between representatives, advocates, federal workers, and the public.

The event marked a transition from studio reporting to live public dialogue, inviting questions, exchange, and accountability. Swain Domain documented moments behind the scenes throughout the night, capturing the powerful moments that brought it all together.

Shortly after National Guard troops were deployed in Washington, D.C., uniformed personnel took positions in highly trafficked public spaces as residents and commuters moved through their daily routines.

These images document that moment — a visible military presence set against familiar civic backdrops, including Eastern Market Metro Station and Union Station.

Visual journalists from across the country gathered in D.C. this weekend for the 2026 White House News Photographers Association Eyes of History® Contest judging.

Each year, members of the WHNPA review thousands of entries documenting the most significant news moments of the past year — from breaking news and political coverage to features, portraits, and multimedia storytelling. Swain Domain plays a big part in coordinating the student competition, recognizing and uplifting the next generation of visual journalists.

Thank you to Jules Joyce Baquie for being a huge help assisting with logistics throughout the weekend.
