I'm leaning so hard into upcycled arts & crafts and mixed media right now. After a few years of saving cardboard, food boxes and packing paper...I have had the urge to start using it. That is exactly what I've been doing. And of course, I'm over here thinking about how I don't have enough cool "junk" and papers. I'm doing a lot of learning while I'm playing.

Been putting in for as many travel guides as I can get delivered via mail. No, I'm not going on vacation. I wish. But, I do like to travel. And this does help me live vicariously thru other places travel ads. Haha! In all honesty, I'm ordering free travel guides for creative purposes. Free resources cause I'm a broke creative. It's just a plus that it's happy mail and not debt/bills.

My first one to recieve is from my very own home state of Mississippi. I was expecting a folded pamphlet – not a magazine and super huge highway map. Good job, MS!

My prototypes of upcycled art journals, using 98% Amazon packaging materials. My little art therapy diaries. I love the little square one. So yeah. They're ready to be filled up. Decorated and dabbled in. Used again.

5 stacks for 5 art journals.
This has been so fun curating.
And I'm still brainstorming.

I could honestly split all of this and get double the books. But. I want these to be thick with multiple signatures. Who knows?! I might or might not split these up.

The stack on the far left that's open is actually my "rejects" pile. It's the thinnest and probably my favorite one.

Lots of handmade folders. Annnd the 2 smaller stacks have pockets made from envelopes I had stashed in an art folder from high school like 23 years ago. I have a few different ideas for the hardcovers, too.

After these are assembled, they will be ready for even more creative expression & filling.

So, I'm creating and compiling lots of different insert options. Handmade. Found. Packaging. Upcycle. Spent the night staining and baking paper cuts for future book signatures. I still have to heat press them. But. I really, really like the way these look, feel, sound & smell.

UNTITLED JUXTAPOSITION —
About last night. These two scraps, from a book about the death penalty throughout history, really came out well together. Especially considering it was unintentionally dubious. The noose just so happens to be held in the shape of what I see as a gun. Such as the top. Death.

CREATIVE SIDE QUEST — I learned a whole lot about book binding while making this cute upcycled junk art journal. Which was exactly the point. My favorite parts are the wax & parchment papers, and that chapter 37 book page in the front. That's my age.

I plan to use this for mark making, aphorisms and random ephemera for the remainder of this year. My birthday is December 21st. So, this little book is perfect for releasing my inward parts. I'm not seeking perfection and pretty with this one. Just playing and "letting it out".

I used things that I had on hand. Was totally winging it. Took my time. Made some mistakes but executed well enough. Now I know I need a long arm stapler. Haha! I picked up some threading needles of all shapes and sizes yesterday for less than $2. I want to have multiple binding options. Which leads me onto a new hunt for fabrics! I really need fabric.

Here's where I'm at in wingin' it with this art scrapbook junk journal situation. I'm not hatin' it. AND it has pockets!...

I'm not hatin' it. AND it has pockets!

It's also a no sew because I dont have a big big-eyed needle. Butchers twine, masking tape and modge podge for binding. It matches the aesthetics. Using stripped cardboard for the hardcover. I don't know how it's gonna turn out. But. I know it's gonna look, feel & sound cool.

U P D A T E D to say — it's mostly finished and so damn cute. I'll get photos when it's daylight out. But it's pretty much ready to start using.
