Sunday Garden Round-Up ❤️🤍🩵

What a weekend.

Rodeo. 😳🤯🫣😱

Boat and lake and fireworks.

Long talks with Mimi on the water and on the porch.

So much food.

Our Taylor girl got married.

A morning walk to the creek.

I’m too tired to have any words but I’m grateful for this place and these people and this life. ❤️

“We have a 6.5-year-old son who has some behavior struggles (mostly anger and some anxiety). I’d love to see what the next step would be as far as meeting with you (either as a couple or as a family?).”

I found this excerpt from the inquiry form I sent to a counselor in 2015 after a friend recommended her.

I love how breezy I sound.

“Hi! Just checking in about my mildly troublesome child!”

The truth is, our family was in The Pit. (If you spend a lot of time in certain parenting Facebook groups, you’ll hear this phrase a lot.)

Every day involved bracing for the next explosion. We were exhausted, ashamed, lonely, and hanging on by a thread. I had no idea how to ask for help.

How do you say, “my home feels like a war zone and I think maybe I’m part of the problem because I keep losing my temper but also if he wouldn’t act like this I wouldn’t lose my temper can you please fix him so my life can be okay please and thank you?”

This week, I sat down to write an essay explaining what people mean when they say, “Regulate your nervous system.”

I realized I couldn’t explain the phrase without first telling the story of how I ended up needing that language in the first place.

The link is, as always, hanging out in my bio. 💛

Happy Sunday, friends.

A deep breath for this midsummer evening.

I enjoyed my last weekend of June; I am finally settling in to the lazy river of summer days, working so damn hard to not work so damn hard.

I am letting myself laugh in the garden at the goodness of the first ripe tomato and minutes later feel genuine sadness standing at the kitchen counter while eating a perfect peach. There are only so many days of the entire year when a peach tastes like a peach.

I am letting it be a gift that I feel so many things so much of the time. I will bless this heart of flesh.

I am soaking up these days of big kids, of their laughter with me and with each other, of the goodness and mercy that has followed me all the days of my life but sometimes didn’t feel like it.

Midsummer is a mixed bag, but what isn’t?

Welcome to the Sunday Garden Roundup, viral tattoo reel edition. 🌱

What a strange trip of a weekend.

A big birthday for my first kid, a lot of celebrations, his first tattoo, and a reel about it that has gotten more attention than anything I’ve ever posted. 🤯

So that’s been fun and weird.

Also it’s Father’s Day and it’s the anniversary of a miscarriage I had on this always-busy weekend and if you are new here and wondering what happens over here at ENPA, this is it: me wondering if I’m saying too much or killing the vibe but never feeling quite settled if I only tell you the happy parts, because they’re never the whole thing.

Almost everything feels like a mixed bag of celebration and grief to me and I don’t know if that’s because I’m honest or annoying or just paying attention.

I try to tell the truth.

Our weekend was good. We celebrated Corey Nolen Photo with pizza and apple pie. I’m currently listening to him patiently teach our sons how to unclog the bathtub in their shared bathroom. There are gagging shrieks of disgust and laughter coming down the stairs. This is the kind of man he is.

The whole thing is such a parenting moment: using the day that is supposed to be about you to teach your children something they do not want to learn, because you love them enough to give them something that will last beyond today.

Hoping your weekend was more hot apple pie than disgusting bathtub but chances are, it was a mixed bag too. It almost always is.

They are all the versions of themselves. Looking back through the pictures, you feel how your heart has expanded because every year you thought please don’t grow up, please stay this age forever. But, if you find yourself indescribably lucky, they do grow up. They do the thing they’re created to do: they get bigger and stronger and smarter. They learn more about how to be a person, they understand new things, they begin to realize they’re part of a bigger story and world. When you look at them, you see all the days of their lives. As the parent, you are the keeper of these memories, of their little faces, the days that were so stupidly hard and the ones you’d go back to in a heartbeat. You look at the pictures through all the years and let yourself be soft enough to acknowledge that somehow you want to throw up with the pain and cry your eyes out at the joy of being their mother.

This child, Grayben Andrew Nolen, is a miracle, a wonder. He is 18 today! Some people say it goes so fast but I don’t feel that way. I have felt every day of these 18 years with him; we have become ourselves together. I look at his sweet face and sparkly brown eyes and all I can do is pray that the explosive love I feel in my heart is somehow transmitted to him in a way that settles deep in his bones. He’s a worker man through and through, always has been and so, of course, he went to bed last night hoping it wasn’t going to rain all day today so he could get after it and cut some grass today. Happy 18th birthday, Grayben Nolen! I love you to the moon and back.

I have a crystal clear memory of using the word “random” for the first time, as in, “That’s so random.”

I had started hearing the cool kids say it at school and was curious about whether I could pull it off. I was in the car with just my family and decided to give it a try.

What a cute little dork I was, soft-launching a phrase in a safe place.

Then I got to college and realized everyone was saying “sketchy,” and if they were super confident, they shortened it to “sketch.”

Language is always changing, and as a word girl, I am always noticing how words and phrases enter and exit our vocabularies.

This summer, I’m writing a series on Subst*ck about therapy language that has entered everyday conversation without a lot of clarity. This week I wrote about my cringy, awkward, deeply reluctant journey of understanding the phrase:

“Where do you feel that in your body?”

As always, link is in the bio (another phrase I hate saying).
