Some weddings come to you. This one came back to me.

Ten years ago I photographed Joshua and Megan's wedding in Key West. Last year I got a text from Joshua's mom telling me his twin brother Jeremy was engaged and getting married at Playa Largo in Key Largo. She wanted to know if I remembered her and if I would come back down.Of course I said yes.

The whole weekend was one of those that reminds you why you do this work. Welcome party with fireworks the night before. An outdoor ceremony that was personal and emotional. Sunset photos on the dock. And a reception with the Gypsy Lane Band — whose bass player was one of the original members of the Village People.

It strips away the distractions, the colors, the noise, and leaves you with what actually matters, the feeling, the expression, the moment itself.

I just finished writing Brittany and TJ’s wedding blog, and I need everyone to understand that this wedding included a six foot unity hoagie during the ceremony.

Not a metaphor.

An actual six foot hoagie.

The officiant walked them through the meaning of each layer, everyone was laughing, and I was standing there trying to photograph it while also processing the fact that I may have just witnessed the greatest wedding ceremony moment of my career.

Then later, the dance floor got wild, the bubble guns came out, and I accidentally inhaled what felt like an entire bath bomb.

Documentary wedding photography is about real moments, and sometimes the real moment is two people beginning their marriage by building a ceremonial sandwich in front of everyone they love.

Brittany and TJ, you two are legends.

During a ceremony, it is easy to stay safe and shoot from the edges.

But sometimes the better story means stepping out from behind the guests, putting myself where I can see the couple and the people watching them at the same time.

That is where the image starts to hold more. Not just what was happening at in front, but how it felt to everyone.

This is what I mean when I say portraits do not have to take over the day.

A quiet minute, a real connection, the place they chose, and then back to the people waiting for them. Beautiful wedding photos should still feel like part of the day, not a pause button on it.

The couple is the center of the story, but the guests are what make the day feel alive.

The hugs, reactions, laughter, tears, dance floor chaos, and quiet looks around the room are all part of what you are actually going to remember.

That is why I photograph the whole wedding, not just the two people getting married.
