Plumes of Distinction

The willow offers a stage, the wind provides a gentle curtain, and for a fleeting moment, the Great Egret stands adorned in nature’s most distinguished attire—an ambassador of grace in a world that rarely pauses long enough to notice.

“The beauty of the backroads is often found in the details.”

The backroads never ask
to be noticed.
They simply wait—
with tall grass, fading fence lines,
and small flashes of color
resting quietly in the morning light.
And for those willing to slow down,
the details become the destination.

“Crossing Paths”

The boardwalk at Magee Marsh was quiet except for the sound of distant birds and the soft creak of old wood beneath my feet. I had stopped to look for Warblers amongst the trees when movement appeared ahead of me.

Out from the shadows stepped a young fox — cautious, curious, and completely unbothered by the handful of people on the boardwalk. For a few seconds, none of us moved. The fox simply looked ahead, ears alert, eyes locked forward, as if deciding whether we belonged in its world.

Then, with slow and careful steps, it continued down the path as quietly as it had appeared.

Moments like this are why I wander the trails with a camera. Not for perfection, but for connection — those brief reminders that the wild world is never as far away as we think.

The Water that has Passed,

In the heart of the ancient mountains, nestled among towering pines, birch and whispering oaks, stood an old grist mill. The mill had weathered countless seasons, its wooden beams creaking with the weight of time. But it was the water that flowed past it, day and night, that held the true stories of the ages.

The stream began its journey high in the snow-capped peaks, where the first drops of melted snow gathered into a trickle. As it descended, the water danced over rocks and roots, growing stronger with each passing mile. By the time it reached the grist mill, it was a robust stream, full of life and energy.

Generations ago, the mill had been the heart of the village. Farmers brought their grain to be ground into flour, and the rhythmic turning of the millstone was a familiar sound. The water, harnessed by the mill’s wheel, powered the grinding stones, transforming the villagers’ harvests into sustenance.

#

As the years passed, the village changed. The miller’s children moved to the city, and the once-bustling mill fell silent. Yet, the stream continued its journey, flowing past the now-quiet mill. It carried with it memories of laughter and toil, of the miller’s songs and the villagers’ chatter.

Sitting on the creeks’ edge, listening to the flowing water as it meanders its’ way over and around the rocks, you are reminded how the mill offers a tangible link to the past, providing perspective on how far we’ve come in terms of technology and industry. It encourages us to pause, appreciate the present moment, and consider the passage of time and the stories that have shaped our world.

On a frigid winter morning, the world was blanketed in a thick layer of snow. The air was crisp, and the trees stood bare, their branches coated with frost. In the midst of this icy landscape, a vibrant splash of red stood out against the white backdrop—a female cardinal perched on a high branch of an old oak tree.

Despite the biting cold, the cardinal’s feathers fluffed up to keep her warm. She chirped softly, her breath visible in the frosty air. The cardinal had found a small branch in the tree, sheltered from the harsh wind. She nestled onto the limb, her keen eyes scanning the surroundings for any sign of food.

The day was quiet, with only the occasional rustle of leaves as the wind whispered through the branches. The cardinal’s sharp beak pecked at the bark, searching for hidden insects. She knew that surviving the winter required resilience and resourcefulness.

As the sun began to rise, its golden rays pierced through the cold, casting a warm glow on the snow-covered ground. The cardinal felt a surge of hope. She spread her wings and took flight, her red plumage a beacon of life and color in the otherwise monochrome world.

She flew to a nearby feeder, where a kind-hearted human had left seeds and nuts. Grateful for the sustenance, the cardinal ate her fill, her spirits lifted by the generosity. With renewed energy, she returned to her perch in the old tree, ready to face the challenges of the cold day ahead.

In the heart of winter, the female cardinal’s vibrant presence was a reminder that even in the harshest conditions, beauty and resilience could thrive.

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas!!

This is my 2024 Christmas Card cover! I took this image at Dolly Sods in West Virginia. The winds blow so hard up there that the trees only display branches in one direction. I added some tree lights and Santa and reindeer flying across the sky as the sun was coming up. I’ve now created a card for the last 19 years, almost didn’t do it this year but didn’t want to break the streak!
