SPRING BOUNTY: A female Wilson's phalarope in full breeding plumage snatches a damselfly larva. (35mm film)

These shorebirds are seen in shallow ponds, marshes and lakes in western North America during the breeding season. In an unusual twist, females are more brightly colored than the males, to attract a mate. Once she lays her eggs, she will abandon him to look for other males to mate with, while the males raise the young alone. By summers end, they will congregate in large flocks for the return flight to South America.

TREADING LIGHTLY: A black-necked stilt is easily distinguished with its long pink legs relative to its body size. (35mm film)

It is a pleasure to see these long-legged shorebirds return to their breeding territories each spring in central Montana. I have sometimes found them in relative abundance with American avocets, patrolling the shallows of freshwater marshes, mudflats and lakes feeding on aquatic insects. While trying to take advantage of a prolific hatch of damselfly larvae along the shore, this stilt is captured in a defensive posture from competing birds nearby, but remained undeterred while feasting on this bounty.

NEW LIFE: A pronghorn doe and fawn will stay together for about a year, but at this early stage they will not stray too far apart. (35mm film)

Fawns may spend the majority of their first few weeks hiding in the brush, when they are most vulnerable to predators, but as they grow stronger the pair will eventually join larger groups. With excellent vision and 320° field of view, their large eyes can detect movement from great distances. When alarmed, the white hair on the rump is flared up for others to see, but pronghorn are the fastest land mammal in the Western Hemisphere, so at speeds reaching 60 mph, adults can easily outrun any predator, as will this fawn in a few weeks.

MONTANA BADLANDS: Eroded hoodoo formations amid the dry and windswept badlands are found in Makoshika State Park, MT. (4x5 film)

Montana's largest state park (11,531 acres), whose name was derived from the Lakota to mean "bad land” or "bad spirits", is a great place to just roam amongst the pines, junipers and unusual geology in this ancient land, where some of our most impressive fossil remains have also been discovered. Coming upon this wind and water sculpted scene highlighted between the shadows, immediately screamed out to me in black and white in my minds eye.

PAINTED HILLS: Layers of color from ancient floodplain sediments are splashed across the Painted Hills at John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, OR. (4x5 film)

After millions of years accumulating volcanic ash deposits, followed by long periods of erosion, this multilayered strata became oxidized over time. The colorful soils are most vibrant after a rainfall and especially during evening hours, however, they are also very fragile, so it is prohibited to walk on them for obvious reasons. Although the Painted Hills are wonderful in their entirety, I was drawn to the layers, patterns, and colors of this otherworldly setting.

BOILING OVER: Microbes help to create a variety of colors at the lower terrace of Palette Spring, Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone National Park, WY. (35mm film)

One of the most famous landmarks in the park features travertine terraces, steaming pools, and colorful formations with nearly two miles of trail to explore. Underground geothermal activity is constantly in flux, forcing superheated water to the surface in an ever-changing display of shapes and color, as revealed here!

MAGIC WATERS: Sol Duc Falls plunges into a narrow chasm along the Sol Duc River, Olympic National Park, WA. (4x5 film)

A short easy hike through the old growth forest brings me to one of the most popular waterfalls in the state. Translated from the Quillayute to mean "magic waters", and it certainly feels that way as the energy is penetrating. The new spring growth framing the foreground adds depth and there is nothing like large format film to bring out the most intimate details.

BRILLIANT BLUE: A male mountain bluebird with its vibrant plumage, offers a momentary pose. (35mm film)

The first sight of mountain bluebirds passing through in the spring is always inspiring. On their journey north, some may travel from Mexico to Alaska. As a cavity nester, they have taken nicely to nest boxes placed near open fields. They often hover above the ground before diving onto the insects that make up the majority of their summer diet. I have seen males bring food to a brooding female to feed her clutch. Once hatched, the young will leave the nest in about three weeks, and by autumn, all will make the journey south again.
