COZY SURROUNDINGS: A red fox, of the cross melanistic color variant, is resting comfortably on the Alaskan tundra during the early stages of autumn.. (35mm film)

There is something exotic about what is commonly referred to as a cross fox. Some are quite dark, but most resemble this mix of orange and dark brown. These color variants may confuse the casual onlooker for a silver fox, or "something else", but the white-tipped tail will quickly differentiate the red fox from all others.

STANDING PROUD: An impressive dall sheep ram appears to be posing for this image high on a ridge. (35mm film)

Denali National Park is one of the few sanctuaries where dall sheep are protected, so it is possible to see them at a reasonable distance if one is motivated enough for a bit of hiking and climbing. Prior to the rut, these rams are found in bachelor groups, so if you catch sight of one high up on some cold windswept bluff, there are bound to be more. Even in a national park, to have a ram standing directly in front of me like this up in their world is always a special experience.

DENALI BEAVER POND: The fall colors with the Alaska Range and Denali beyond, provided a tranquil setting for this beaver pond, as one of its residents cruises past, Denali National Park, AK. (35mm film)

A leisurely stroll across the autumn tundra found me at this beaver pond on a very pleasant evening. Most any appealing landscape with a reflection will lure me in for a closer look. When this beaver surfaced and began crossing to its lodge on the other side, it provided a more intimate moment and a perfect compliment to define this scene. Over the years, I've learned with photography, much like some paintings, that not every landscape has to be overly dramatic to be profoundly inspiring. Subtlety has its merits!

MORNING MOOSE: Dawn finds a cow moose feeding on aquatic vegetation in Wonder Lake with the snow-covered peaks of the Alaska Range as a backdrop, Denali National Park, AK. (35mm film)

Sunrise in the first days of September is still pretty early this far north, so it requires some perseverance to get here and set up in time to capture the first light! From my campsite at the other end of the lake, it's about a three mile hike, so set the alarm, grab a headlamp, hustle your butt, and roll the dice on the weather! Sunrise was a little muted, the fall colors on the tundra were at its peak and I lucked out with a moose to balance out the scene. All in all, it was a successful morning and a very pleasant day!

WHAT'S UP: With the onset of autumn, a large barren-ground caribou is starting to show signs he will soon be shedding his summer velvet. (35mm film)

I happened upon this big bull caribou just a short distance into one of my daily hikes. As he was resting comfortably on the autumn tundra and didn't seem concerned at my presence, I took a few quick pics and moved on. The Denali Herd once numbered around 20,000 in the early 1900's, but overhunting reduced them to fewer than 2000 animals today. They are now protected inside Denali National Park, so some animals have become accustomed to seeing people in a non-threatening manner. Caribou are such an iconic species in the far north and some bulls sport large impressive antlers with asymmetrical shapes, so they quickly became one of my favorite subjects to photograph.

MERGING FORCES: A spectacular view of Mount Robson (3954m), the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies, Mount Robson Provincial Park, BC. (4x5 film)

Toboggan Falls sluices down through limestone slabs while Tumbling and Mist Glaciers advance the north face of the mountain, all converging into the silty water of Berg Lake. The lake is appropriately named, for there are times when one can see numerous "bergs" floating in the water or resting ashore. With breathtaking views of this imposing mountain, it is easy to understand why this is one of the most popular backcountry treks in all of the Canadian Rockies, and worth schlepping a 4x5 camera up there to capture it on film!

TRAVERSING THE DEADFALL: A grizzly bear affectionately known locally as "Rasberry", was captured in a home range consumed by a wildfire many years ago. (35mm film)

Some of the grizzly bears seen regularly in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem have adopted celebrity status among wildlife advocates around the world. It is no coincidence, most have home ranges near park roads, often in close proximity to the throngs of people all hoping for the opportunity to witness a grizzly in its "natural surroundings". It has been theorized that some female bears with cubs will use this comfort zone as a shield against predatory males. However, it comes with some risk each time they approach, cross or travel on the road. Unfortunately, some impatient drivers speeding in the parks may be oblivious while in their rush to get to wherever it is that is so essential further down the road. Sadly, it is believed Rasberry met her fate at the hands of one of these careless drivers while still in her prime, but the memories shall live on for those who were fortunate to watch as she raised multiple cubs during her lifetime—some of whom now occupy that same territory raising their own cubs, as the cycle of life continues!

SEIZING THE MOMENT: A bald eagle having snared a fish and surrounded by the snow-capped mountains is a sight to behold. (35mm film)

Bald eagles will often scavenge dead or dying fish near the surface, but watching the frenzied feeding of multiple eagles, gulls and terns dive-bombing into a herring ball is always a thrill. Isolating a single bird is a challenge, yet having a target rich opportunity is hard to pass up, because it won't last for long. One eagle with a fish would often turn into a desperate chase of multiple eagles trying to steal it away. I have seen eight eagles in pursuit with numerous exchanges between them before one is finally able to peel off with the prize!

TETON SUMMER: An early morning view of the Teton Range is reflected into an arm of the Snake River near Schwabacher Landing, Grand Teton National Park, WY. (4x5 film)

Taken many years ago, it is impossible to imagine being the only person here to enjoy this scene today. Indeed, it was a quiet morning as I watched the fog dissipate to expose this classic view in a moment of complete solitude. Time may have changed how we experience these iconic places, but the mountains shall endure.
