Our Story

It was October 1967. George Stofer approached me in the morning when I walked into school. He asked if I was J.D. Small and then asked if I was a photographer. I had been snapping pictures since 1958, but in 1966 I became more and more fascinated with photography and spent most of my after school hours creating photographs.

George was a writer for the Teen Page of the Lansing State Journal and had been encouraged to find a photographer. In 1967 we teamed up and started working together creating articles for the Lansing State Journal. With the experience creating photographs for the Lansing State Journal, I expanded to the Williamston Enterprise and within a little while my photography business grew to photographing all kinds of portraits, photo restoration, and wedding photography.

The Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, New York, was the beginning of my more advanced education. Earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Professional Photography with a minor in business, college was followed with the United States Army as a Motion Picture Director and a Pictorial Officer. After the time in the Army, I returned to New York for eight (8) years and in 1986 returned to Michigan, establishing a commercial photography business as it is today.

As a Michigan based photographer, J.D. Small, has become ranked in the top five photographers in the United States by national publisher, Matt Miotke. His award winning photographs have brought acclaim to business across the United States.
