Charlotte Fire Department Updates Pt. 2

Here are some more fleet updates. After 25 years of running Spartan/Smeal rigs, things are changing. The former Ladder 16 was badly damaged during the tragic Liberty Row Fire in 2023, and its replacement ended up being the last Smeal ladder delivered.

New rigs for Ladders 20, 32, and 45 are Pierce Enforcer 107' rear-mounts. Ladder 45 is the newest ladder company, operating as a single piece from Station 45, located between busy Stations 15 and 27 in the Hidden Valley area of the city.

Engine 44 is a brand-new company in West Charlotte, currently working out of a temporary facility until their station is completed.

Engine 47 is also new, temporarily running from the former Engine 30 long-term temporary house. Station 47 will be the third airport station at Charlotte-Douglas, and when it opens, it will operate Engine 47 along with several ARFF trucks.

Rehab 1, based at Station 8, runs a unique grey colored rig. I'm not sure if it is staffed 24/7 or cross staffed by Engine 8.

There are new Pierce Enforcer engines on order to keep pace with worn out 2012 Spartan/Smeals. The first batch should be here late this year.

Station 46 is being built in Northwest Charlotte. Unsure when E46 will come online. There is also a 9th battalion added at Station 11 back in 2025. Lots of growth for the Queen City!

Stats for these companies:
L16 – 2025 Spartan/Smeal 2000/370/30F/107'
E44 – 2012 Spartan/Smeal 2000/500/30F X: E38
L45 – 2025 Pierce Enforcer 2000/500/107'
E47 – 2014 Spartan/Smeal 2000/500/30F X: E17
Rehab 1 – 2025 Freightliner M2/Frontline

Charlotte Fire Department Updates

Charlotte is a rapidly growing city, and the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport is expanding right along with it. Currently, Stations 17 and 41 serve the airport, with a third station breaking ground and a fourth parallel runway under construction. Ramp 17 is built specifically for handling vehicle fires in parking decks and is a 2025 Ford F-350/Knapheide equipped with a 60-gallon CAFS skid, multiple Class D extinguishers, and blankets for electric vehicle fires.

Station 17, affectionately called The Sock, operates Ladder 17, the only “street side” suppression unit. Ladder 17 currently operates a 2019 Spartan/Smeal 2000/370/30F/105' ladder that previously served Ladders 39 and 27. In 2027, Ladder 17 is set to receive a new Pierce Enforcer 100' Ascendant platform and will be renamed Tower 17. Also at Station 17 is Blaze 2, a 2025 Oshkosh Global Striker 2000/3000/450F/450 /460 .

Blaze 41 at Station 41 is a 2025 Oshkosh Striker 2000/3000/420F/460 with a 50' Snozzle boom.

Cypress Pointe Fire & Rescue in Moore County, NC runs some impressive apparatus that I photographed over two separate visits. Formed from the merger of Cameron and Circle V, they operate from four stations and also provide mutual aid to Lee and Harnett counties. Some of their unique rigs include:

Engine 211 – 2014 Pierce Impel 1500/1000/30CAFS (first purchase after the merger)
Tanker 215 – 1998 Freightliner FL80/Semo 4x4 500/1250/30CAFS, ex-Circle V, NC
Tanker 216 – 2021 Kenworth T370/Fouts Fire 500/2000
Rescue 219 – 2001 HME 1871/Hackney, ex-Circle V, NC

Apparatus of the day

Today, we’re heading back to Ashe County, NC, to check out some cool apparatus from the West Jefferson Fire Department. First up is a stunning department-owned parade piece, a 1942 Seagrave 66E7 with a 750 GPM pump and 250-gallon water tank. Bearing serial -4807, it was part of an order for the U.S. Navy and may have served at a naval yard in Baltimore or Philadelphia. This apparatus also had civil defense logos on it, so it may have served elsewhere after WWII. I think someone from Jefferson said this was picked up in the 1950s or 1960s. Any additional info would be great.

The second truck is West Jefferson’s newer addition, a 2016 International 7500/Rosenbauer 4x4, featuring a 1,500 GPM pump, 1,000 gallons of water, and a 20-gallon foam cell. Fire apparatus has certainly grown in size over the years and taken on more functions.

The last apparatus is one of two ladders in the county (the other one is at Warrensville). Ladder 7 is a 2008 Spartan/Rosenbauer, with a 1,500 GPM pump, 300-gallon tank, and 75' aerial.

*Delayed post*

On May 19, 2026, Winston-Salem Fire Department was alerted to an apartment fire in fire station 18's territory in the 3900 block of Valley Ct. Ladder 18 arrived first to find heavy fire showing from the rear of the building. Ladder 18 and Engine 8 performed fire attack while Engine 10 assisted with water supply and search. Ladder 1 performed vertical ventilation. Due to heavy fire conditions and elevated temperatures around 90 degrees, a second alarm was struck, bringing in additional companies to the scene. Battalion 1 was in command. There were no injuries and all searches were negative.

Run card: L18, E8, E10, E15, E6, E14, E13, E1, E18, L1, L14, L2, R1, Safety 7, FINV 1, AIR 1, BATT1, BATT4, Chief 100, FCEMS

Apparatus of the day

During my trip through Ashe County, I came across two unique pieces of apparatus from the Jefferson Volunteer Fire Dept. Engine 1202 is a 2009 Freightliner M2/Rosenbauer 4x4, equipped with a 1,250 GPM pump and a 1,000-gallon tank. Tanker 1204 is a short-wheelbase 2015 Freightliner 114SD/Rosenbauer, featuring a 1,000 GPM pump and a 3,000-gallon tank.

An interesting detail about Jefferson is that their station sits right across from the American Emergency Vehicles plant, which builds ambulance bodies. On the day I visited, about 10–15 AMR Sprinter ambulances were parked in the fire department lot, ready for delivery. It is quite an expansive operation for the small town of 1,600 people, bringing in much needed jobs for the community. In fact, there are several other companies in the immediate area the refurbish or build similar ambulance bodies on medium-duty commercial truck chassis.

Apparatus of the Day

Today’s featured trucks come from western North Carolina, in rural Ashe County, where North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia meet. One department I had the chance to visit there was the Fleetwood Volunteer Fire & Rescue. Due to the mountainous terrain they serve, almost all of their apparatus are 4x4.

Engine 76 is a 2009 HME 1871-SFO/Rosenbauer 4x4, equipped with a rear-mounted 1,250 GPM pump and a 1,000-gallon water tank. While visiting, I learned that the old Rescue 73 was for sale, so I photographed it as well. Former Rescue 73 is a 1986 GMC 7000/American Eagle 4x4, with a 350 GPM pump, 500 gallons of water, and a 25-gallon foam cell. It was purchased used from Scituate, RI. The new Rescue 73 is a donated 1992 IHC 4900/American Fire & Rescue from Jackson FD in Union County, NC.
