I love this photograph of these girls carrying the Easter basket because it reminds me of my girls.

One of my favorite things about digitizing photos is the stories that start to unfold when you really look at them. I find myself looking at the expressions on people’s faces, wondering what might have been happening in that moment, and trying to spot clues about where the photo was taken.

In this photo, one of the first details I noticed was the podium labeled “Hotel Multnomah.” I had never heard of it before, so of course I had to look it up.
The Multnomah Hotel was built in 1912 and occupies an entire city block. It’s size made it Portland’s largest hotel at that time. Over the years it hosted countless famous guests, including Elvis Presley and Bing Crosby, as well as several U.S. presidents like Theodore Roosevelt and Richard Nixon.
Another fun fact I found was that not once, but twice, airplanes took off from the roof of the hotel! The first was in 1912 and then again in 1995.
In 1995 the hotel was sold, and in 1997 it reopened as a Hilton Embassy Suites hotel. Today it’s also part of Historic Hotels of America, which helps preserve historically significant hotels.
All of that history came from noticing one small detail in a photo.
It’s a reminder that preserving photos is important but preserving the stories behind them is just as important. Write things down. Tell your people. Don’t let the history end with you.

A photo of what I believe to be one of the paper mills at Willamette Falls in Oregon City. This was a photo from a box of old photographs I bought off of Marketplace so I don't know what year it was taken. I did see a similar image on the Forgotten Oregon Facebook group that was from 1955 so I'm guessing it is from around that time period.
My family lives in Oregon City and it has been crazy to see the progress they have made in tearing down the old Blue Heron Paper Mill. I'm excited to see the redevelopment.

This photograph has survived nearly 80 years of life, moves, albums, and hands holding it.
