I don’t think I honestly have this struggle. Or at least I don’t take it on. I figure we all see things uniquely. This doesn’t just go for the photographers, it also refers to potential clients. So while there are many photographers on island, we all do things differently and clients are all looking for different things.

I just do things the way I want to do them. If a potential client does not hold the same vision as I do then the referrals are endless. So I guess having a saturated market works in my favor some times, because the worst outcome is an unhappy client.

Just because you are the only person providing a service, doesn’t mean everyone will come to you or that everyone will be happy. I prefer to have 3 happy clients.

Happy New Years!!!
Yes I’m late, but we still have 11 more months to get through and enjoy.

I saw this message and thought it was so smart. And upon further inspection I realized it doesn’t work for me. My issue (or at least what I think my issue is) is that the problem I solve does not become a problem until it is too late to solve it.

No one at the start of their relationship, birth of their child(ren), or in the throws of their happy years, realizes that they are not preserving the moments and they may regret it. It is only when the moments pass and we perhaps feel nostalgic that we think back and wish we had something to rejuvenate the memory. And even then, this can be done with so many mediums. So photography is one of many, much less a paid professional shoot.

So it becomes hard for someone like me to sell the problem I solve. Especially when I just want to make people smile when they scroll through their archive of photos or glance at a wall displayed with memories.

Every parent knows that a vacation with your children isn’t really a vacation for you. You spend more time catering to their needs, and less time relaxing.
Yet, when I search my memories, my best ones are surrounding those vacations with my children. Seeing them so happy, makes me so happy.
While Asia was missing from this shot, It makes me so happy to see these three enjoying themselves.

I may enjoy being around my children after all 🤷🏾‍♀️lol

Engagement/Couple shoots are so much better than weddings in my humble opinion. A wedding is pretty much scripted and it is clear everyone is trying to be perfect. I am hustling to to get “perfect moments” from everyone. It leaves me feeling stressed.
An engagement shoot is just me and two people. Yes, the couple has ideas, but plans can change easily. So I get so many natural moments.

P.S. I have only done 2 weddings, so my opinions should be taken with a grain of salt.

Because real moments can’t be scripted.

Sometimes a candid moment can define an experience. The morning I took this shot I was feeling bumm-ish and desperately needed my hair twisted. I wanted to cut it so badly and I was certain I would cut it by the end of the day. So I decided to take photos of myself, that way I could remember me when I had locs. I asked my sister to come with me for 5 minutes to take some photos. After I got the shots I wanted, I started shooting some of her. She wasn’t prepared and we didn’t plan it, but the wind was giving us EVERYTHING!
I didn’t cut my hair that day and her photos made the five minutes worth it. We laughed and joked about taking photos on the side of the road and I’ll never forget that short photoshoot.

Because life isn’t stagnant, so why not freeze a few moments.

A few years ago my daughter asked me “how can my friends have a family tree without a daddy”. I had no idea how to answer her. Just that week she handed in her kindergarten family tree assignment and apparently some students didn’t have fathers on their tree.
I eventually stumbled through a response, but that got me thinking. Our babies only know what we teach or expose them to. I’m sure other children in her class had no idea how she had a daddy on her tree. Their little minds aren’t thinking about the circumstances of life that lead to their unique trees. These circumstances affect their outlook on life. As well as, what is viewed as “normal” to them as they transition into adulthood.
I never know if I am making the correct decisions, however, as a parent all we can do is try our best and love hard.

I am taking my children to the beach today and I was struggling with whether or not I should take my camera. Then It hit me. WHY NOT?! I never regret taking my camera with me on beach or park days. Sometimes I don’t edit the photos for several months, but when I get to them I am so happy I made the right decision months ago.
For most of us, it is as simple as taking out your phone and snapping a few shots while they are doing their own thing. Those are the photos we scroll back to see and can never delete.
So why not take the photo?

The first photo is a representation of my lifestyle newborn photography work. The other photos are from my personal stash.

Am I the only one that doesn’t have a single interactive photo with my father as a child. Sure I have a couple from my wedding and as an adult; but none as a baby or young child. Even though I know he was there, like in the house!
Dads are so underrated. We know without a shadow of a doubt that our moms love us, yet we have to be given proof that our dads feel the same way. I’m not sure why this is.
I think I would have loved to see a photo of my dad caring for me. To see the worry, wonder and shock on his face, knowing that his life has changed forever. I think about things like this since becoming an adult and having my own children. Am I the only one🤔?

I woke up feeling restless. Like I should and could be doing more, but wasn’t. I told myself this year I would not become complacent. I would push and push and push. It’s only March and I have already slacked off. Is it just me, or is everyone falling behind on their New Year’s resolutions?

There is a photo of my mother when she just had me. The day I was born (I was told). My mom looked so young, and for some reason, I never thought my mother was young until I saw that photo. It’s foolish, I know, but in my mind, my mother was always an older woman. That photo was the beginning of me starting to understand that my mother was once a young woman at the beginning of her life. It’s weird that we think our parents were never young. Although, we know they were. Photos matter in that regard. When the young man who was baking in these photos, see this in 20 yrs, he will realize that his mother was and probably still will be a knock out. Simply a young woman at the start of her life. He will never know this side of her. Due to the transition she had to make in order to provide all his needs.

I did a shoot a while back and the little boy started to cry. He wasn’t in the best mood and wanted to cuddle. That was not what mom had in mind and he was left in a bad mood. I kept taking photos. Photos of him, photos of his siblings and photos of mom and dad. He eventually felt left out and joined in. During my process, I decided to edit the photos of him crying and place it in their family gallery. I didn’t know what to expect. I just thought it was a part of the process and it couldn’t hurt to leave them as part of their gallery. Either they would like and select them or leave them behind. 🤷🏾‍♀️
A week later mom reached out and was so happy that I included them. She chose every one. That simple gamble left me feeling so empowered. I felt confident that I was making the correct choices in my photography and with the families that reach out to me.
My goal is to market to a specific type of family. A family that wants what I would want. Those are my perfect clients. And it is validating when I attract them.
