May 19 2026.
I checked on my hive and they are about ready to be split. Splitting a hive is when you take some worker bees, brood, and some resources from an established hive, place them into an empty hive or nuc, and introduce a new queen to the new hive. If the worker bees accept the new queen, then brood production will begin and the new hive will start to grow. This is a way to grow your apiary and prevent swarming, which is when a queen bee and half of the worker bees leave their hive to start building somewhere else.
When I spotted my queen bee, I noticed her blue mark I placed on her had been cleared off and a small faint spot was left, so I remarked her. Hopefully it stays this time.
