I visited the old WWII radar station on Ash Island this Anzac Day morning. The site, significant for its role from September 1942 until January 1946, was recognized when it was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 16 April 2010.
By 10:45 AM, the usual quiet was pierced by the roar of the F-35, a reminder of the station's wartime vigilance. The flyover was brief but striking, The roar of the jet sweeping over the weathered remains of the station and the surrounding flora broke the silence.
I captured these moments with my camera, each photo weaving together the past and present of this historic site. The juxtaposition of modern aircraft and the aging radar equipment underscored the deep historical layers of Ash Island.
Standing there, as the planes faded into the distance, I felt a profound connection to the past. This Anzac Day, the Ash Island radar station served as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the war, bridging the courage of yesterday to our lives today.
