Friend Or Foe?

In terms of composition, this was one of the simplest photos I have ever created but in terms of lighting it is by far the most complex.

I spent a long time in Adobe Lightroom trying to get not only the colours and tones blended exactly the way I had envisioned but the highlights and shadows correct on various part of the photo to try and make it look like everything belonged together.

For example, I wanted the light from the Deer's antlers to cast a subtle blue glow over it's back and head as well as the front of the boy's head. As the antlers are the main light source for the deer and the light coming through the gaps in the trees being the main light source for the boy I spent a long time carefully placing and shaping shadows and highlights around areas such as the floor.

Two birds of a feather

This photos was one of those photos where I just told myself I wanted to sit down and 'make something'. And oh how I bit my words on that one😂

This turned out to be one of the most complex photos that I have made to date. I chose to use the puppet warp tool to shape the wings of the two birds in different positions and as a result of that there was a lot of clean up around the edges with the eraser tool and blur tool.

This photo was actually fully black and white until I decided to put it into lightroom and using linear and radial gradiants, add the blue and purple as I felt not only did they compliment my brand colours nicely they contrast really well together in much the same way blue and orange do.

Creatures Of The Night

As some of you may have noticed I've recently taken a break from posting on this account. I did this as I had been posting almost daily for quite some time and I felt as though I needed some time to take a step back and refresh myself with new ideas and inspiration. My goal is to always post the very best possible work that I can so I have decided that by cutting back on the amount of photos that I post I can take my work to the next level and focus on quality over quantity.

I'm so happy with how this photo turned out and it is one of those photos that came out exactly as I had envisioned it. I love the tiny details which unfortunately don't show up the greatest on social media such as the blades of grass on each of the surfaces of the rock. The most challenging part of this photo was actually the teeth because they all had to be made individually and then placed and blended together seamlessly.

Alone In The Big Wide World

This photo was slightly different in the sense that I designed and drew the robot from scratch in Google SketchUp. Google SketchUp is a software that I am quite well versed in so I wanted to try and use it to my advantage to create a 3D model of a character that I could then angle and pose exactly as I wanted in Photoshop to capture the overall look that I was going for.

The robot design itself is more of a mash of ideas, brought together in a way that made sense. The eyes were the biggest challenge as they are one of the most visually striking parts of the character and had to somehow capture how the character might be feeling in the context of the photo. I really like the contrast that the robot's cartoony look creates against the more realistic looking surroundings.

Mission Accomplished

This is one of those photos that I had the idea of doing for so long but couldn't quite figure out exactly how I wanted to execute the overall look and feel of the scene. I wanted it to feel very atmospheric whilst at the same time having a bit of an apocalyptic aesthetic to it but most of all it had to tell a story. What that story is, I'm not too sure. That's for you to decide.

Peculiar Lodgings

This photo was an interesting one for me to create. I had a rough idea in mind of what I wanted to create but I didn't know all of the little details. It was rather a case where I started out by creating the outline of the stag and adding bits and changing the position of the head several times until I was happy with how it looked. Removing some of the antlers was a decision I made part way through the process because if I was to keep them fully in frame the head would have been extremely small or low down😂

I've added some photos taken at various stages in this edit to better demonstrate how my work typically starts and the changes it goes through😂

Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far they can go...

8.5 hours of work later and I'm proud to say that this is my new favourite piece of Photoshop Art that I have created to date. This photo is a combination of photo compositing and drawing, with elements such as the staircase in the centre and the blades of grass being hand drawn. All of the rocks were made out of several tiny rock photos, each blended together, stretched and twisted to get the shaping exactly how I wanted.

Unfortunately Facebook massively compresses photos which ruins the overall quality.

That Shouldn't Be Here... 🌙

This photo was an enormous, yet very interesting challenge. Fitting a glowing moon through a house was a lot more complex than I imagined, primarily because it had to glow correctly and all of the light had to bounce off of the building, the person and the surrounding landscape in a way which looked semi-believable. As believable as a giant glowing moon stuck through a house can be of course...

The full speed edit video will be available on my YouTube channel shortly. This will show the full process behind creating this photo and how each individual part of it was achieved.

Beneath The Waves

This photo was a challenge above anything that I have ever created before and I'm extremely happy with how it turned out. I wanted to challenge myself to create a mystical underwater scene that clashed with the real world in some way.

I went through several iterations with the underwater layout. At one point I had the shipwreck in the bottle but the length of the mast and the cork of the bottle clashed far too much so in the end I decided to split them up and amplify the size of the bottle to really add to the mysterious feeling of the photo.

Whilst the main layout of the photo was created in Adobe Photoshop, most of the work took place in Adobe Lightroom. This is because I wanted to get the water to look extremely green and murky whilst also being clear enough to see the underwater scene. In the end I achieved this look with several linear gradients. The subtle glow of the moonlight hitting the water was a last minute radial gradiant which I feel hugely impacted the overall look of the photo.

The Dreamer

Photoshop is such an incredibly powerful tool. It allows you to take a dream or an idea and bring it to life as a piece of art and create a world (or galaxy) where anything is possible.
