The Road Shimshal Built

Leaving the Karakoram Highway near Passu, the road to Shimshal enters a narrow gorge beside the Shimshal River. Its unpaved track runs through tight bends and wooden bridges before reaching the high valley settlement. For a rider, the drama is not just the scale of the Karakoram. The road itself is the reason this journey can now be made on wheels.

Construction began in 1985 and took 18 years. Shimshal residents contributed volunteer labour, with intermittent government and NGO support. After it opened in 2003, a difficult three-day walk to the highway became about a two-hour jeep journey.

𝗛𝘂𝗻𝘇𝗮, 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝗦𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗗𝗼𝘄𝗻

Hunza is the kind of place where a motorcycle ride naturally becomes slower. The road follows the river, old villages appear between the mountains, and every turn brings a different view of the valley. From Karimabad to the high mountain roads, the journey is not only about reaching a destination. It is about stopping often, taking in the silence, and enjoying the character of northern Pakistan.

Attabad Lake did not exist before 2010. A massive landslide blocked the Hunza River, submerged villages and formed the lake seen by travellers today.
