Some places are not visited
they are experienced

Florence is one of them

I first arrived in Italy in 2007
curious, passing through Rome & Venice only

But it wasn’t until I returned as a wedding photographer in 2011
that I understood what the city of Florence truly offers

Time slows here
Light lingers longer than it should
And every corner carries centuries of quiet intention

In the year of 2011, Anna and Perry chose Florence not just for its beauty
but for its architecture, its history, its permanence

A city shaped by legacy
yet still deeply alive

This is where I create my very romantic work
not just photographs
but something that feels like it belongs to time itself

The woman behind saving America’s Chinatowns.

I’ve had the privilege of photographing Grace Young since 2022, when we were first introduced through .today in New York.

Many people know Grace for her friendship with Julia Child, her James Beard Award, and being named USA Today’s Woman of the Year. But the Grace I know is someone deeply nurturing and profoundly generous.

Especially when it comes to her tireless activism supporting Chinatowns across America. During the pandemic & long after, Grace has been a powerful voice protecting & uplifting these communities we love, shining a light on the humble stories of Chinatown’s mom + pop restaurants & shops, and the generations of families behind them.

Some of the most important stories I’ve photographed Grace weren’t in fancy studios with big lights.
They were on streets like these.
In small kitchens.
Inside restaurants that have quietly fed generations.

Grace will be speaking at this Tuesday at 11:30 AM in Austin on the topic of Chinatown & the making of an accidental activist.

We are officially living in the future.
But sometimes I wonder… are we already living inside the Matrix?

AI office assistants.
Reflective glass towers.
Self-driving cars.
Concrete parking lots.
Black leather pants and sunglasses.

And paper money becoming a relic of the past.

The Matrix trilogy has resurfaced in my work over the past two years. It feels more relevant than ever.

While teaching at the Sony Pro Support event in San Diego on February 21, I explored this Matrix concept through lighting, composition, wardrobe, and model’s posing/movement while sharing the creative process behind the shoot.

Thank you to and the Sony Pro Support team for inviting me to step outside the system for a moment (for giving me the red pill) and exchanged ideas with fellow Sony shooters. ProSupport has taken care of me throughout my professional life, so it meant a lot to come full circle and share it with the community.

In a world that sometimes feels like a fast-moving simulation, Sony Pro Support has become a photographer’s life support system — repairs, loaner gear, and early access to the tools that keep us creating, and creating is what it means to be alive.

And when my gear needs repair, it is reassuring to know there are still real humans behind the system taking care of it.

I will also be in San Francisco on March 18–19 for Creative Space on the Road.

Food has always been a love language in our culture. It is how we care for one another.

So being invited to help tell the visual story behind the launch of ’s frozen line felt incredibly meaningful to me.

This project celebrates something I deeply believe in. Supporting rising AAPI brands while sharing our cultural lineage through food, family, and the East meets West perspective many of us grew up with.

Seeing these images travel from the restaurant kitchen to freezer aisles in major retailers across the country truly made me jump for joy.

A heartfelt thank you to , her wonderful mother Jenny (LuLu), and Mr. Li for welcoming my crew & me like family during our shoots in St. Louis MO. And to the amazing team at .co and : & Sara who made this collaboration so effortless.

Honored to be part of this story.

Gung Hey Fat Choy 🧧✨
In the sprit of lunar new year, a quick reflection of last year in which I am grateful to have photographed so many of my couples in one of my favorite places in the world, San Francisco Chinatown. It is a place where we honor heritage, celebrate culture, and mark some of life’s most meaningful moments.

Jessica and Lawrence, based in LA, were married in San Francisco this past December. I was so excited when they chose Chinatown for their wedding portraits as a way to celebrate their union and embrace the richness of our culture.

We visited many of my favorite spots, from for lap cheung (because love, like preserved meat, deserves to be preserved ❤️😆 ) to the historic staircase of the century old on Washington Street, We stopped by to say hello to the legendary Wok Lady Tane Chan because marriage is a “work/wok of life time together”. We strolled along Grant Avenue, and posed in front of .sf , locals & tourists were cheering for them, granting them blessing for their marriages on this special day! How lucky am I to be able to photograph them in my element filled with joy & beautiful weather!

Such good luck, may that follows you too!! Wishing you all in the Year of the Fire Horse 🐴 to be filled with joy, prosperity, lots of ❤️ love, kindness, and abundance surrounding you!

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day and Lunar New Year 🧧❤️, let’s revisit these photos of two people in love, captured on my Sony Alpha’s “Ai Mii” camera, which I lovingly call 愛me in Love me. 愛我 😘📸 . Ps. These are unretouched straight out of the camera photos from the camera.

This was from our co-teach workshop in Hong Kong in December 2024 with sifu. I miss shooting there so much and would go back in a heartbeat ❤️

February holds many stories.
Black History Month and Lunar New Year 🧧

Two histories. Two lineages. One shared language. Food. Strength met heritage. Elegance met labor. Past met present.

Last September I collaborated with for this editorial ahead of his runway debut. We placed couture inside a working Chinatown kitchen, a space that quietly carries generations of memory, labor, survival, and pride.

The kitchen is sacred in both Black and Asian cultures. It is where recipes are inherited, where stories are passed down, where resilience is practiced daily. It is where culture stays alive.

Celebrating creativity that bridges communities and reminds us that culture is something we build together. Shot on

February is Black History Month and Lunar New Year 🧧 A moment where both heritage power and all the creativity meet.

I was honored to collaborate with fashion designer for this editorial created ahead of his runway debut last September. We photographed this story in San Francisco Chinatown, a place where American history lives through resilience community and the universal language of romance & food.

I loved photographing Bri and Simba against this backdrop. In the previous post Simba waited with quiet strength. In this one she arrives. Regal grounded and commanding the space. Her presence completes the story.

This felt like my good interpretation of Brandin’s design. Strength softened by elegance. Tradition reimagined through modern form. A queen claiming her place in a space rich with cultural memory.

I didn’t give up my tech job for nothing.

When I switched to photography full time in 2010, I made a pact with myself that this life and this work had to be meaningful.

I often think about what it means to be a photographer for the people I work with. In an instant, a connection forms. I see them through my lens, to fall in love with who they are, and make them the main character of the story we are creating together.

I have photographed destination & local weddings, fashion portrait and commercial work, but it is my personal projects that bring me the deepest joy. That especially when I can combine photography + my bilingual skills through my ongoing Woman of Chinatown Portrait of Unsung Heroines project. Working with them reminds me life is a constant balancing act, yet I don’t feel tired when I am behind the camera, just like how they’ve worked countless hours to keep the community thrice & warm.

I hope that one day, when my skin is all wrinkled and my hair is 100% gray, I will see my kids using photography to self soothe or found new ways they see the world. That alone would make me dance at my own funeral.
