One of our Exchange Place Artists, Lyn Carruthers Artist, would like to offer an Open Invitation to see The Lost Words Exhibition at Museums Sheffield Millennium Gallery 21-23rd June
Here's what the Gallery say about .
"Acorn. Bluebell. Dandelion. Fern. Heron. Otter.
So many words describing the natural world are disappearing from our children’s everyday language. The Lost Words by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris is a spellbook, summoning lost words back into the mouth and mind’s eye. Following a successful crowdfunding campaign, a copy of this book has been given to every Sheffield primary school in autumn 2018."
Lyn has been one of 9 artists commissioned by Museums Sheffield to work with children, inspired by The Lost Words, on this Exhibition. She has worked in April and May with children from year 3 and year 5 in Phillimore Community Primary School Darnall with support from their teachers and teaching assistants. The piece is called "The Joy of Conjuring Back The Lost Words".
They worked in mixed media including willow stakes, oak wood, fishing wire, paper, cardboard, pencils, crayons, felt tips, wool, wire, lace, ribbons, feathers, beads. Drawing, rubbing, making, and chanting were inspired through listening to The lost Words audiobook spells. Working with plants, willow and oak brought nature into the classroom. Parents were involved; translating into community languages and sharing their knowledge.
These pieces and work by the other Artists and schools, including willow sculptures, a poetry machine, ceramics monoprinting and more, are on display at the Millennium Gallery from 21-23 June 2019.
Hope you can make it to the exhibition and see and experience the great work by Sheffield children.
