Did you know Peonies historically & culturally, from Chinese and Japanese art where they symbolize good fortune. Peonies get their name from the Greek god and healing deity Paeon. a student of the Greek god of medicine, Asclepius. In Greek mythology, peonies were associated with healing and protection. Peonies have been used medicinally to treat issues like headaches and muscle cramps.

It's Iris Time Again. Batik Irises. My batik irises usually have more purple than white, but I really like this unusual one as well. The roots of the iris plant have been used medicinally to treat skin infections, syphilis, stomach problems and dropsy. Today the roots are still used to purge the liver. Some alternative medicine uses include using yellow iris to treat dandruff and white iris to treat asthma and bronchitis, as well as use as a diuretic.

When native bees and butterflies first venture out in the spring, they desperately need flowers that provide nectar. If you enjoy a flower that does that and changes from pink, to purple, to blue, all on the same plant, you’ll want Virginia bluebells in your garden. Mertensia virginica is edible, including the flowers. Virginia bluebells had several uses in traditional Native American medicine, including as a pulmonary aid, tuberculosis treatment, and treatment for whooping cough (Cherokee), root infusion antidote for treating poison, and root decoction to treat venereal issues (Iroquois). Native Americans believed a tonic made from this plant could help heal those who were under-the-weather.

Hellebore is native to much of Europe and is commonly found in early spring and shade gardens in North America as well. Hellebores look like members of the rose family but they are actually members of the buttercup family.
