Algaita 📷 by .becker - Northwest Nigeria, at the Durbar of the Argungu Fishing Festival. Before the spectacle unfolded, it was the music that greeted me first - a musician playing the algaita, its piercing, soulful notes drifting through the afternoon air. Alongside the steady rhythm of the drums, the sound of the algaita gives the durbar its unmistakable atmosphere, setting the pulse of celebration and weaving tradition into every moment. Colour and sound merge in the golden afternoon light.

At the Durbar of the Argungu Fishing Festival, a group of Tuareg guests with camels from across the border is a reminder that heritage travels. They bring the spirit of the Sahel and desert into the heart of the celebration.

Back from Argungu, here in Nigeria, and I’ve just finished shooting. It’s been an intense few days, and I’m proud of what I captured. Here are some images from day 4, along with the story behind the fishing festival.

Images from the series:
1) Thousands of fishermen gather to compete, each using traditional handheld nets.
2) The race to the river - participants sprint nearly 300 meters to reach the water’s edge.
3) Fishermen leap to the river, many using local gourds as buoys - these fruits grow larger than watermelons and help keep them afloat.
4) The competition is underway.
5) A sea of nets fills the river, each hoping for the biggest catch.
6) Spectators line the banks, watching as the event unfolds in historic Argungu.
7) A fisherman, one of many hoping for the prize.
8) A proud fisherman displays a fish caught with bare hands - a testament to skill and tradition.
9) Officials measure the fish: a 59 kg catch, earning its fisherman a grand prize package.
10) Traditional rulers from across Nigeria, as guests of the Emir of Argungu, observe the festival’s main event.
