Language during birth matters SO much more than people realize.

There’s a huge difference between someone saying “here’s what’s going on, here are your options, how are you feeling about this?” versus “we’re going to do this now.”

And obviously birth can change quickly sometimes and interventions absolutely have a time and place and I’m very grateful we have them when needed, but moms still deserve to feel like they are PART of the conversation while birth is unfolding instead of feeling like things are just happening TO them.

I think that’s why I care so much about education. Because understanding what’s happening changes the entire emotional experience for so many moms.

Summer while being on call for births is honestly kind of hilarious because I’m simultaneously trying to plan camping trips and water play dates for my kids while also mentally calculating how quickly I could get back to civilization if somebody goes into labor 😂

I want to disappear into the mountains for a few days and sit by a campfire and let my kids run wild outside and read my book in a camping chair…

but I also need enough cell service to answer “I think this might be labor?” texts! 😂

I think my clients always assume being on call feels super stressful, and it is sometimes, but weirdly it just feels like part of life to me right now. My brain is always halfway prepared for a birth at any given moment. 😂

There’s this point where a birthing mama stops caring about literally everything else going on around them and turn completely inward. Their eyes change, their whole energy changes, conversation kind of fades away, and it’s like they’re suddenly somewhere else entirely mentally. This is what we call "labor land."

And I know from the outside it can look intense or scary sometimes, especially for first time partners watching it happen, but to me it’s always one of those moments where I’m like okay yes… she’s THERE. She's IN IT.

I think it’s incredible to watch because in regular everyday life we spend SO much time in our heads overthinking everything, worrying how we look, trying to stay composed and aware of everyone around us… and labor just kind of strips all of that away. Nothing matters except getting through the next contraction and following what your body is asking you to do.

There’s something really powerful about seeing someone completely surrender to what their body is doing in that moment.

One of the hardest parts of motherhood for me has been realizing how much emotional regulation matters. And it's something I'm in the process of learning everyday.

I'm over here trying to stay calm while tiny people are all yelling at me, touching me, asking for snacks, fighting with each other, crying because the banana broke wrong 😂

It’s freaking HARD!!!

And sometimes I think people (ourselves included sometimes!) assume that being a good mom means magically never getting overwhelmed or overstimulated and that is just absolutely not accurate.

I’m usually trying to emotionally regulate myself in real time so I can help my kids regulate too. And some days I do great. Some days I hide in the garage and eat chocolate 😂

It’s my friend Hope’s birthday today!

I’ve photographed SO many seasons for her family at this point… pregnancy announcement, maternity, birth, newborn, Mother’s Day sessions, and all the chaos in between. And one thing I love about her is that she fully embraces the “connection over perfection” thing with me.

Kids melting down? It's cool. Chaos happening? Totally fine. We roll with it all! She trusts me to find the magic in the middle of real life and I think that’s why their galleries always FEEL so alive!

One of my favorite things is when families fully lean into the chaos during sessions instead of fighting it 😂

TRUST ME when I say...
the toddler running wild (or not wanting photos and hiding in your arms)
the baby needing to nurse, or sleep, or cry
the laughing and playing in between poses

Running a business as a mom is such an experience...I feel like I’m constantly working in the in-between spaces 😂

Answering emails while someone asks for snacks.
Editing after bedtime.
Sending contracts from the parking lot at pickup.
Thinking about social media while cooking dinner.

Running a business is hard.
Motherhood is hard.
It’s all HARD!

But my plate is full of things I genuinely love, and I think that changes everything because even on the overwhelming days… I still feel really freaking grateful that this is the life I built.

It’s one of my soul sister’s birthdays today and I’ve just been thinking about how wild it is that we’ve been friends since middle school 😭And how tf is that almost 30 years!?

We’ve done awkward middle school phases, heartbreaks, marriages, babies, postpartum, career changes, all of it together. There is something so special about friendships that have seen every version of you.

And also… everyone deserves friendships where you can disappear for a little while because life is insane and then come back and pick up exactly where you left off!

Let’s talk about homebirth for a second because I know people have BIG feelings about it 😂

First of all… no, homebirth is not for everyone.

But also?
For most LOW RISK mamas homebirth is actually a very safe option.

I think sometimes people hear “homebirth” and immediately picture something dangerous when really… the homebirth families I work with are some of the most informed and intentional parents I’ve met.

Also can we talk about how amazing it is that we live in a time where moms HAVE options??
Hospital.
Birth center.
Homebirth.
That’s a GOOD thing!!

Birth is not one size fits all!!

Anyway… if you had a homebirth I wanna hear about it because homebirth stories are always wild and beautiful and amazing to me!
