NATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT PRIZE FINALIST 2023

📷 A brief reprieve from isolation, 2022 by Lily Hatten

This assisted self portrait was taken during a period of isolation imposed by impetigo, a common, painful and contagious childhood skin infection. I remember feeling alone and small in the face of my daughter’s distress, and the intensity of being stuck inside our little flat, fighting this bacteria while the infection raged on our children’s skin for a month. The only reprieve was when we made it down to open water when no one else was around. The normal, unremarkable brutality of family life.

💕 Mum's the word this week - literally. We're sharing portraits from our NPPP finalists of, by or with their mothers.

Just landing after driving home from the National Photographic Portrait Prize at the National Portrait Gallery - where my work, “A brief reprieve from isolation” (2022) is part of the Finalist’s Exhibition.

Being part of something like this was once beyond my wildest dreams…the other finalists were so kind, their work was incredible, and the NPG was so lovely and welcoming to us all. It was just great to be around so many people who love and care for photographic portraiture.

Huge congratulations to (Winner) (Art Handler’s Award) and (Highly Commended) and congratulations to all finalists - I’m in awe of your work and your commitment to your craft.

Thank you to for having us and and .joanna.looks.at for doing the tough job of judging the prize.

And thanks to my friends and family for coming to the launch. It was so much fun. Thanks Mum .lever.writer and Sister for looking after the kids while I went to the launch.

So grateful to have been a part of it!

A brief statement about the work: This assisted self portrait was taken during a period of isolation imposed by impetigo, a common, painful and contagious childhood skin infection. I remember feeling alone and small in the face of my daughter's distress, and the intensity of being stuck inside our little flat, fighting this bacteria while the infection raged on our children's skin for a month. The only reprieve was when we made it down to open water when no one else was around. The normal, unremarkable brutality of family life.

Voting is still open for the PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD. Just head to the online exhibition catalogue at portrait.gov.au/nppp and click on the photo you want to vote for, scroll down and follow the instructions.

The Exhibition runs at the NPG until October 2023, then it will go on a regional tour.

What a week!

Window portraits in lockdown - a special offer

Mamas, I know how these days slip by, I know how hard it is, birthing, feeding, raising little ones behind masks and closed doors. I see you, and I want you to feel seen.

I’ve been offering window portraits in lockdown, by donation. I just booked my last session by donation before the price goes up -

BUT then I realised I hadn’t given my Facebook followers a chance to book one (most of the magic happens on Instagram) - so I’m offering ONE more window session by donation to anyone who lives locally and is pregnant or less than six months postpartum.

Once this session has been snapped up, I’m going to continue offering window portraits alongside my other offerings until we’re really finding our way out of this pandemic.

This is a really good deal at half the cost ($375) of a regular portrait session and you’ll get:

🌙 TEN digital images

🌞 FIVE 4” x 6” prints of your choice

✨ Web hosting for your images for two months

And the option to add more photos or prints, or add 35mm film.

2021 Availability - September and November are filling up fast, there’s still a little space in August and October. If you have a time sensitive session (like maternity or newborn) in 2021 please book in soon so you don’t miss out.

I’ll be in Queensland in the final week of September. Apart from that I won’t be travelling for work until 2022. Please message me for (tentative) 2022 Sydney dates.

Hey friends,

It’s come to my attention that some email enquiries are ending up in my spam folder. I reply to all email enquiries. So if you haven’t received a reply within seven days please message me on Facebook or Instagram to make sure I got the message. As far as I know this is the first time this has happened and I’m devastated!

Thanks loves x

If you’d like to book a session with me, my books are opening back up from the beginning of July (Byron Bay & Surrounds).

If you’re in Greater SYDNEY, or anywhere on the EAST COAST or the NSW NORTHERN TABLELANDS/NEW ENGLAND/HUNTER/BLUE MOUNTAINS between Byron Bay and Sydney, or Greater BRISBANE & SUNSHINE COAST please read on:

Some dates are already taken for 2021 so particularly if you’re keen to book while you’re here on holiday, or for maternity or newborn sessions, reach out early so you don’t miss out.

I’m thinking about a trip to Sydney in July or August, and I could stop along the way, either via the East Coast or the Tablelands. If you’re in any of those places and you’d like to book I’d love to hear from you sooner rather than later so I can plan ahead.

I’d also love to spend some time in Brisbane, and perhaps the Sunshine Coast if I can get a cluster of bookings (perhaps September?).

Thanks for sticking with me through that and I hope it made sense 😅. I look forward to hearing from you guys.

Please note that I cannot hold your date for you without a deposit.

Love Lily x
