PHILIPPINES β€” Air quality remains poor in several parts of the Visayas and Mindanao as smoke from wildfires in Kalimantan, Indonesia continues to be transported into the country.

According to the latest reports, Central Visayas has reached the β€œAcutely Unhealthy” category, while Western Visayas, SOCCSKSARGEN and parts of Northern Mindanao, including Iligan, remain β€œVery Unhealthy.” Eastern Visayas, the Davao Region and other parts of Northern Mindanao are classified as β€œUnhealthy for Sensitive Groups.” citeξˆ‚turn0search6

In Metro Cebu, a monitoring station recorded an AQI of 252 at 11 a.m., placing it in the Acutely Unhealthy category. Cabitoonan in Toledo City recorded an AQI of 227, also classified as Acutely Unhealthy. Authorities warn that conditions could worsen if the Indonesian wildfires continue.

The haze is primarily associated with elevated PM2.5, microscopic particles that can pe*****te deep into the respiratory system. N95 or KN95 masks are recommended for people who need to go outdoors, while prolonged outdoor exposure should be avoided, particularly by children, older adults and people with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions.

PHILIPPINES β€” Transboundary haze believed to be linked to wildfires in Kalimantan, Indonesia continues to affect parts of the Philippines as of Thursday, September 3, 2026, with elevated fine-particle pollution reported in parts of the Visayas.

In Iloilo City, the DENR-EMB recorded a PM2.5-based AQI of 150 at 5:00 a.m., placing the area at the upper end of the β€œUnhealthy for Sensitive Groups” category. Haze has also been reported in Alimodian, Miagao, Igbaras and Tubungan in Iloilo Province.

In Metro Cebu, the DENR-EMB previously recorded AQI readings of 152 at dawn, 172 by midday and 173 at 3:00 p.m. on September 1, placing the Cebu airshed in the β€œVery Unhealthy” (151–200) category.

The haze is primarily associated with PM2.5, tiny particles that can pe*****te deep into the respiratory system. The DENR-EMB continues to monitor air quality across the country, including PM2.5, PM10 and gaseous pollutants such as carbon monoxide (CO).

Residents are advised to limit prolonged or strenuous outdoor activities, particularly children, older adults and people with respiratory or heart conditions, while haze persists.

MANILA, PHILIPPINES β€” Haze believed to be associated with ongoing wildfires in Indonesia has reached parts of the Philippines, prompting authorities to closely monitor air quality in several areas. As of September 1, 2026, 10 cities in Metro Manila recorded β€œvery unhealthy” AQI levels ranging from 150 to 200, including Quezon City, Manila, Pasay, Taguig and Valenzuela.

ParaΓ±aque City and Las PiΓ±as recorded even higher readings, reaching the β€œacutely unhealthy” range of 201–300, while Makati, Navotas and Pateros registered AQI levels between 101 and 150, classified as unhealthy for sensitive groups.

The DENR-EMB is monitoring elevated PM2.5 and PM10 levels as smoke from Indonesian wildfires continues to affect regional air quality. Residents are advised to limit prolonged outdoor exposure and wear a properly fitted N95 or equivalent mask when haze is present, especially vulnerable individuals.

WEST KALIMANTAN, INDONESIA β€” Wildfires are intensifying across West Kalimantan as thousands of hotspots are detected across the province, blanketing several areas with thick smoke and severely reducing visibility. On August 31, the number of satellite-detected hotspots in West Kalimantan nearly doubled to 7,377, while active fire spots rose to 104, with visibility dropping below one kilometer in some areas.

Authorities have intensified firefighting operations, deploying aircraft for water bombing, aerial patrols and cloud seeding, while ground teams continue efforts to contain fires in high-risk areas including Ketapang, Kubu Raya and Mempawah.

The prolonged dry conditions and an intensifying El NiΓ±o pattern have increased the risk of fires spreading rapidly, particularly across fire-prone peatlands. The resulting haze has affected public health, disrupted schools and transportation, and has also crossed into neighboring Malaysia.

Authorities are warning that the situation could remain critical as limited rainfall is expected to continue through September, keeping the threat of additional forest and land fires high.
