Some whiskey releases stand out because of what’s inside the bottle. Others stand out because of the story they’re trying to tell. Mugen Spirit’s Oni Small Batch aims to deliver both.

Lately, it feels like there aren’t many new bourbon releases landing around the $100 mark, especially ones leaning this heavily into storytelling. At 117 proof and a $99 MSRP, Mugen Spirit Oni Small Batch stands out by leaning into its story as much as the whiskey itself. The real question, though, is whether what’s in the glass lives up to the story behind the bottle.

Check out the YouTube video to hear Chris’s full thoughts on this pour!

Thank you to Kojin and the Mugen Spirit’s team for sharing this sample of the latest release in the Yokai Series with us!

On February 28, 2026 we were invited by Southern Distilling Company to take part in their Cask to Cork Program. Designed to be personal and hands-on, the experience offered a rare opportunity to slow down and engage with whiskey in a way that feels both intentional and memorable.

Rather than a traditional tour, the focus was on choice and participation. Matt Foster, the barrel maturation manager, guided us through four different barrels, each with its own character, and gave us the time to select the one that aligned most closely with everyone’s palates. Since I don’t drink, the final decision came down to the two barrels Chris enjoyed the most.

I have a tendency to record a lot of footage at the various bourbon events I attend, or even just when Chris is sharing his thoughts on a pour at home. The problem is that I do not always get around to editing it. Since I am sitting on so much of this content, I thought it might be fun to start sharing some of those moments as quick throwback videos. I will do my best to keep them under five minutes.

This particular clip is a quick, unscripted moment of Chris trying Sazerac 18 Year Old Rye Whiskey at Bourbon Classic 2025!

In this episode of Whiskey Moments, Chris shares his quick, in-the-moment thoughts on Sazerac 18 Year Old Rye Whiskey while we were at the Bourbon Classic la...
