The construction of a wall will not eliminate crime.
While a wall may reduce or deter certain criminal activities in a specific area, it is important to recognize that crime often shifts rather than disappears entirely. Sustainable solutions require addressing the root causes of criminal behavior rather than implementing measures that simply relocate the problem.
During the recent State of the Nation Address (SONA), there was a substantial and highly visible security presence across multiple areas. This demonstrates that coordinated and effective service deployment is achievable. The pertinent question, therefore, is why such levels of visibility and enforcement cannot be maintained consistently to ensure ongoing public safety.
As citizens, we must also consider our role in holding relevant stakeholders accountable. Many successful suburban safety initiatives are funded directly through taxpayers’ contributions. It is reasonable to expect transparency, responsible governance, and consistent service delivery in return.
In this context, it is important to ask whether the community was meaningfully consulted and engaged in the decision-making process surrounding the construction of the wall. Similarly, were community members adequately involved in decisions relating to the MyCiTi bus project and its reported multi-billion-rand expenditure?
These are only two examples among several major initiatives that warrant public scrutiny. Meaningful community participation, transparency in decision-making, and accountable governance are essential to ensuring that public resources are allocated responsibly and in the best interests of all residents.
