My last picture of Roy Smith in October 2025; Seguache, CO. It was difficult for Roy to get up from his bed, but he insisted on wrapping himself in classic Roy materials and standing for a picture. Sadly, Roy died earlier this month.

Cheryl Swanson Scruton and I are greatly saddened by the loss of our dear friend Roy Smith. Roy maintained an out-going, charismatic personality while persevering through an often difficult life. His remarkable life story is one of resilience - in large measure of resilience through art-making. In an almost childlike way, he got great redemptive joy from filling the world around himself with beautiful objects of his own making.

For several years Roy lived cheerfully in Royville, a remote patch of baron, desert-like land with no electricity near Saguache, Colorado that he filled with re-cycled materials and his own creations. He would say how much every day he looked forward to nightfall when his solar-powered garden lights would begin to sparkle, making Royville glow in the darkness while strings of plastic jugs and aluminum cans rattled in the ever-present San Luis Valley breezes.

Since 2020, we visited Roy once or twice every year, most recently in November. He had become very frail and couldn’t stand for long, but still insisted on posing for pictures wrapped in reflective fabrics and glittering tinsel streamers. Cheryl and I will greatly miss taking Roy to local restaurants and hearing his reminiscences from a lifetime of adventures. We’ll always treasure the times we spent with Roy.

Clyde Jones holding a neighbor baby; Bynum, NC 2008

Clyde Jones and his art environment home were great fun to visit. He filled as much of the world as he could with fanciful critters - a great legacy!
