BROOKLYN, NEW YORK
-
A few months ago I asked / if I could come and take his portrait while I was in New York. Little did he know I would take up hours of his time digging deep into his creative mind to explore the meaning behind his work. It was an honour, my friend.
The full meanderings can be found on my journal, linked in my bio. Here are a few pieces I chose to share from that.
-
From scrawling on tailored suits to skin to walls to crumpled wine menus and massive canvases with India inks and palo santo ash water, cigarette smoke and drops of red wine - art leaks out of him with ease. Sometimes spending 7 hours on a piece without lifting ink from canvas, integrity is always upheld, intention is always prioritized, yet it is his subconscious that speaks.

I think in order to create great work there must be a fearlessness of creating something that might not be liked, or worse, might not be understood. There must be a willingness to follow curiosities into hardware stores and down alleyways in Chinatown in search of the perfect butchers knife. To create fires in the kitchen sink, to seep hands into plaster and have pockets full of nails.
Within that fearlessness is also a trust. A trust in the relationship to the unknown, a trust in the universe to provide the right ingredients needed to create something meaningful, to drop inspiration into the puddles of the subconscious.
