Pakistan just recorded its lowest fiscal deficit in nearly 27 years, and economically that is a big achievement because it signals more stability, lower default risk and better fiscal control. But I think many ordinary Pakistanis are struggling to celebrate these headlines because while the numbers may be improving at the top, life on the ground still feels painfully expensive for the middle class.

A huge part of this fiscal improvement has come from increasing the burden on the same people who are already fully documented and easiest to charge. Petroleum levy collections crossed Rs 1.2 trillion this year, salaried individuals continue facing rising taxes deducted directly from their income and electricity bills remain overwhelming partly because consumers are paying not just for electricity usage but also for capacity payments made to power producers. According to estimates discussed by energy experts and NEPRA data, capacity charges alone can account for roughly Rs 15 to Rs 20 per unit in many bills before taxes and other adjustments are added.

Pakistan absolutely needs economic stabilization, but stabilization alone is not enough if ordinary people do not eventually feel relief in their daily lives. A sustainable economy cannot keep relying primarily on petroleum levies, electricity surcharges and taxing salaried professionals harder every year while purchasing power keeps shrinking.

Real recovery is when economic improvement becomes visible not just in government numbers but in the financial breathing space of everyday citizens too.

Sometimes we spend money not because we need something…
but because we want to feel accepted, admired, or “successful.”

Looking back, I wish someone told me earlier that financial peace feels better than social validation.

Especially in Pakistani culture, there’s so much pressure to *look* sorted before we actually are.

Just sharing things I had to learn the hard way. 🤍

What’s one thing you regret spending money on in your early days?
