Happy 82nd birthday to L**h Walesa! I’ll be seeing him tomorrow! Here is the cover of the Polish language autobiography published on his 80th birthday. It is my portrait of him from 1998 at Luther College!

L**h Walesa, Solidarity Union leader, President of Poland, Nobel Peace Laureate, has started a speaking tour of the US and Canada. At the end of the month he will be here in Minneapolis. The promo piece for the tour uses my 1998 portrait of him.

This Fall L**h Walesa will be touring the US and Canada speaking about the challenges of our time.
His Minneapolis speech will be September 30th at the Minneapolis Convention Center.
The portrait used in the ad is from a photo session we had in 1998 at my alma matter, Luther College, in Decorah, IA. He had told the designer “contact this guy, this is my favorite portrait of me!” Flattering words from a person so widely photographed!

Happy 90th birthday to the Dalai Lama. This is my 2001 portrait of him for The Carlson Lecture series hosted by the Humphrey School of Public Affairs. It was taken backstage at Northrup Auditorium at the University of Minnesota.

This year’s Nobel Peace Prize goes to the Japanese organisation Nihon Hidankyo. This grassroots movement of atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, also known as Hibakusha, is receiving the Peace Prize for its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through witness testimony that nuclear weapons must never be used again.

Two pioneers of artificial intelligence have won the Nobel Prize in physics. John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton were awarded the prize Tuesday for discoveries and inventions that formed the building blocks of machine learning.
