THE DESPERATE LEAP, AT BROOKS FALLS, ALASKA
—It’s easy feasting for the brown bears at Katmai National Park’s Brooks Falls. In order to reach their spawning grounds in nearby Brooks Lake, the salmon are required to make a desperate leap to clear this considerable hurdle. Those unlucky enough to make it on the first or second attempt may find themselves victim to one of the 80-100 hungry brown bears that frequent the area. At peak times, park visitors may witness as many as 50 bears at once, congregating at the falls.

LONE CLIMBER ON SLEEPING BEAR SAND DUNE
—Michigan has 3,288 miles of freshwater shoreline, more than any other place on Earth, and few of those miles are as dramatic as the 35 mile long Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The high, steep bluffs of the majestic main dunes tower roughly 450 feet over the brilliant blue waters of Lake Michigan below. Visitors are able to enjoy the thrill of running down these dunes, which can take merely a minute or two. But this comes at a price- a strenuous 2 hour+ hike back to the top, that not everyone is able to accomplish. Signs are installed to inform tourists of the $3,000 rescue fees for anyone stuck on the dunes, paid at their own expense, of course. This picture was taken in the spring, before the large summer crowds come to behold this crown jewel of the Great Lakes State. I imagine this sole hiker, slogging his way up the dunes, was seriously rethinking his choices at this point, but it made for a dramatic visual, as he paused to take a rest high above the waters below

WILDFLOWERS ON CLEMENTS MOUNTAIN, GLACIER NATIONAL PARK
—towering over the nearby Logan Pass, at the summit of the Going-to-the-Sun Road, Clements Mountain (rising nearly 8,800 feet) is the dominant feature on the hike to Hidden Lake. Such is the depth of snowfall at these elevations, that snow removal operations typically last deep into summer, in order to open the pass to visitors. This leaves a narrow window for the vast alpine meadows of wildflowers to bloom every year. The day after this photo was taken, over a half foot of snow would fall on Logan Pass, reinforcing the old axiom that timing is everything!

CABO SAN LUCAS AND THE TIP OF BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO
—Stretching nearly 800 miles into the Pacific Ocean, and forming the Gulf of California, Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula is covered with deserts, volcanoes and mountains. These peaks were formed from the same uplift that formed much of the Sierra Nevada range in the US. The Baja is famous as a whale breeding ground, and sport fishing destination, attracting many tourists. Cabo San Lucas, at the peninsula’s southern tip, is the largest and most famous resort town.

CLYDESDALE HORSES GRAZE BEFORE MONTANA’S BRIDGER RANGE
—A small mountain range standing to the east of the Bozeman/Belgrade area, the Bridger Range is named for famed mountain man Jim Bridger. Like many of the ranges in Montana, it is not particularly tall- all peaks stand below 10,000 feet of elevation. But they are no less dramatic, forming a long wall, a beautiful backdrop, behind the many farms and ranches below.

LATE AFTERNOON IN THE ELK MOUNTAINS, NEAR ASPEN, COLORADO
—Home to 6 of Colorado’s ‘Fourteeners’ (mountains of at least 14,000 feet in elevation), the Elk Mountains are a small, yet dramatic subrange of the Rockies. The range’s rugged peaks are popular for mountaineering, and its lush valleys are a hiking destination. Well before attaining its status as a skiing destination, and home to some of the most expensive property in the world, Aspen was known as a former silver mining boomtown, dating back to the 1880s.

MORNING FOG AND FROST BELOW THE PEAKS OF GLACIER NATIONAL PARK
—Polebridge, MT is a very small settlement in the far Northwestern reaches of the state, with a population only averaging double-digits year round. With no access to electricity, and limited means of communication, not much has changed since its homesteading roots dating back to the turn of the 20th century. The settlement is the gateway to the northwestern corner of Glacier National Park, and its scenic lakes- Bowman, Kintla, Quartz and Logging.

SNOWLINE ON A MOUNTAIN
—On an early autumn morning, this small peak outside of Spokane, WA, was only partially covered by snow and ice, with a clear border separating the frost-free foliage of the lower elevations. It may be the result of orographic lifting- moist air is forced to rise from lower elevation, which cools the air rapidly and increases the relative humidity to 100%, forming clouds, and orographic snowfall. You can probably make a pretty good guess of how high the cloud bases were overnight.
