It was a rainy day along the banks of the Khwai river when the adult African wild dog pack first served their puppies a meal after their morning hunt and a fight started among the youngsters about the leftovers grabbing what they can. There was on exception ..... the youngster of the alpha dog was untouched keeping a large piece of meat.

Another portrait of one of the alpha male lions in the moremi game reserve. He just woke up after guarding two sleeping lionesses of the xini-pride. Soon after a few yawns he prepares to do his daily patrol around his territory.

Last known daughter of Mmatsebe posing nicely next to one of her mothers favorite hideout tree in the Khwai area. It was on the moment she could be rejected by her mother at any day soon.

Another snap out of the photo series of the zebra stampede I photographed along the Boteti river when they were spooked by a couple of pelicans landing in the water. Never getting enough of massive herds of herbivores stirring up lots of dust from the dry beds of the Boteti river.

After seeing them a few times from a great distance in the Kalahari game reserve I finally saw a pair of bat-eared foxes from up close in the Savute area sitting in the grass, well camouflaged next to their den where they probably had a couple of youngsters hidden. So they did not really leave the spot when they made the impression to flee when they saw us.

Taking an African wild dog pack with this angle gives you the feeling you are one of the members situated next to them. This pack was not successful in hunting that day and halts to give their ears and eyes a go to detect a prey animal. They can scan an environment like no other.

The legendary Mmatsebe r.i.p. ( back ) together with her last known daughter ( front ) chilling at one of their hideouts. It was one the last of many pictures I did take during the yearly visits to the Khwai area.

This photo was also taken on that early morning ( sun was just starting to rise ) record breaking day for leopards sightings back in 2019 which I told you about on my colour page.
Nine spotted cats just in the Khwai area alone.

It started just a few minutes after leaving the campsite a male leopard was chasing a female that was with her juvenile male cub ( photo) which was sent all the way up in a tree by his mother while she distracted the stalker from a safe distance.

The attacker got a bit tired and positioned himself beneath the large tree between mother and son resulting in a status quo. When we left the situation there were 2 more leopards hiding with some small prey deep in the vegetation nearby, probably afraid to get detected. Later that day we spotted 3 more. Luck was on our side that day.

During dryer periods various animals are struggling to find watersources but breeding herds of elephants can depend on their matriarch's memory in which watersources and routes are imprinted in their mind. In this photo they found a hidden waterhole partly covered by vegetation in Moremi to enjoy.

The large Xini-lion pride in 2018 consisted of many juvenile male lions all eager to participate to hunt with their mothers. The presence of nearby lagoon water and thirsty prey animals gave them many easy opportunities to scale up successful killing rates among the members. Here they just waited and positioned on an elevated piece of land early in the morning for prey animals to drop by.
