My attention shifted toward the water pump and an engine choking.

The farmer and his assistants worked to restart the irrigation system. After several attempts, the pump finally awoke.

A low mist moved across the field, its path visible as it drifted over the orchard.

The sun, an orange semi-circle cresting the tree line, formed prismatic halos over the blackberries and peach rows.

Over the past few days I've written five field notes (the heavier introspective kind) and now my brain is about as mushy as these snail droppings.

It's amazing how much energy flexing that creative muscle can actually take.

I've found that grouping writing tasks makes it easier to find a deep flow state, but it also leaves me feeling a bit knocked down afterward.

So, as a palette cleanser between the deeper stories each week, I want to start sharing little moments from my yard or neighborhood that simply asked me to stop and notice.

I might have a lot to say about the image, or not much at all, and I'm entirely ok with either. They are an open invitation to pause and notice the little moments. A bit of permission to myself to take the time during a busy work week to be present and connect with nature in the smallest of ways.

So, here is my first : a snail colony finding lodging on a plastic equipment enclosure in my neighbor's yard.

For weeks now, they've dotted the houses, fences, and sidewalks of the neighborhood.

Despite my best efforts, more than a few have accidentally been stepped on during my walks.

It's become a game with my daughter to look out for them and play a version of 'the snails are lava', one made even harder as she learned how to ride a bike and wasn't the best at steering yet. 🚲🐌

And the best part about writing about these mini moments: I don't have to nail the ending. It's just.... Snails!

I knew this transition was going to be brutal on both me and my daughter. In a single move, both of our best friends were suddenly 10 hours away.

Going through the gallery, I kept returning to a single image–Ellie concealed in the peach tree, her small shape merging with the light of the irrigation mist.

And one phrase keeps coming up, again and again.

She called her sister.

With a John Deere tractor nearby, the group split off into girls and boys.

At the Cinderella carriage, Ellie became a fairytale princess. She danced and curtsied before adopting a statue as her Prince Charming. Her mom played Rapunzel, a guest at the ball. She ran around until she lost her shoe and finished the evening as the driver of the carriage.

When I first arrived that afternoon, I stopped by the farm stand to drop off the location fee. The farmer asked if it would be a problem if he ran the irrigation in the orchard. Knowing how magical that fine misting can look in the sunlight, I told him please go ahead.

I’ve been sitting with this session for a couple of weeks now, the words slow to arrive.

These photos were taken two weeks before the big move.

The last time they had visited this peach farm, they were in a different period of anticipation, awaiting the arrival of their firstborn. We all enjoyed a warm May day together back then, my sister-in-law glowing in the sunflower field.
