A mountain hunting musing: the alpine can’t taste sweet unless a four course meal of willow, alder, fireweed and tall grass preceded it.

The migratory drug of choice for me? A bow and a camera.

You’re not seeing the 99.9% of the photos that are meh — or the 15 years of even more mediocre ones before that. The internet is weird like that. It’s a highlight reel of life, and that’s especially true for photographers.

But if I’m answering this honestly, it comes down to the ‘why’… *i think*. It’s hard to be unbiased, but I genuinely love what I get to do. If everything changed, I’d still be in the mountains with a bow or a camera — probably both — and the people I love most.

I feel so fu***ng lucky every day I’m out there.

These first couple photos came from a black-and-white roll of film on my first overnight sheep hunt with my old man in the Alberta Rockies. I was 14 at the time.

I had no idea where they’d lead me 25 years later, as the progression continued.

Photography, bowhunting in the mountains, and wild places have always been tangled together for me. This story doesn’t exist without any of it.

If you want to hear what’s behind these frames, come join me TOMORROW (Friday, Feb 13th) in SLC at the Party for Public Lands campfire storytelling — link in bio.

See you there!

Re-posting my weekly winner reel from the 14th Annual Diverge Photo Contest back in December of the contest. I chose this fantastic image as discussed in the clip and also had it for the Big Game Category Winner. Congrats to Riley and all the other finalists, category and grand prize winner and to EVERYONE out there stealing moments up on a lonely windswept ridge, around a fire or in the deep woods! 📸📸📸

Hats off to and for contributing legit prizes as well as the other judges , .thomas_, .photo and the people behind the scenes like .creed and jockeying all the subs— the level of work in this contest was inspiring! 👏👏

There’s a magnetism to sheep and sheep country — you feel it if you’re lucky enough to have been out there, and you feel it when you start poking around the folks who never miss a Sheep Show.

It’s been fun to watch it grow over the years, but the real energy has always come from the people behind it: the volunteers, exhibitors, donors, and the community that keeps showing up.

Old friends, new ones, sore glutes, a room full of spiking momentum and plummeting sleep scores. If we crossed paths this weekend, thanks for the convos — they stay with me year round.

Keep shooting.

Almost 15 years ago, bought the first photo I ever sold — a shot of my brother on a sheep hunt in the Northwest Territories at .

I remember opening that email from and realizing, for the first time, that maybe this weird mix of hunting, storytelling, and photography could actually become a life.

Slide over and you’ll see a screenshot of the trade-show print they used it for, and the painfully simple invoice I sent in 2010. No idea what I was doing — just chasing mountains with a camera and hoping for the best.

The first image here is Cam again, 15 years later, back in the Arctic Red country. Same mountains. Same spirit. Different chapter.

I remember all like it was yesterday. It cracked something open — this idea that combining a couple of the things I loved most in the world might actually be the thing I get to do for a living. If only I could be so dang lucky.

Here’s to another season in the hills — and to the folks who bring me to the dance, then and now. Grateful, always.
