I really wanted to play around with the early morning light in this one. It was an early start of 4:45 to travel just over 2 hours to Norfolk for 7:30. The early start was definitely worth it!

What a wonderful day at photographing the Kingfisher! There was lots of behavioural activity from the male’s, chasing and defending their territory, and I even got the chance to see a fledgling.

This time next week, I’ll be at Bempton Cliffs!

One of the most magical places I’ve ever been. There’s something truly unforgettable about standing along those towering chalk cliffs surrounded by thousands of seabirds.

To have these magnificent birds right on our doorstep is something we should all appreciate and protect. Bempton is home to one of the UK’s most important seabird colonies, and seeing the Northern Gannets — the largest seabirds at Bempton and across the North Atlantic, is always a breathtaking experience. With their impressive wingspan, striking white plumage, and dramatic diving displays, they are simply incredible to watch.

A Quiet Goodbye

What began as a peaceful afternoon photographing frogs in a small open stream quickly turned into one of my favourite wildlife encounters of the year so far.

While I was focused on the water’s edge, my partner quietly whispered that something was moving nearby. I slowly crouched down, careful not to disturb whatever had appeared. As I settled into position, a handsome young fox emerged through the long grass and reeds, completely calm and unbothered by our presence.

He passed only a few feet away from us and continued along the pathway. Keeping a respectful distance, I followed behind until he suddenly stopped and paused. I quickly laid down to capture him at eye level, creating a much more intimate connection in the image. It felt less like a photograph and more like a quiet acknowledgement, as if he was saying goodbye… and perhaps even thank you for respecting his space.

Some wildlife encounters are exciting because of the rarity of the animal. Others stay with you because of how they make you feel. This was one of those moments – calm, trusting, and deeply humbling. To me, the natural world is full of surprises and entertainment, and if you can experience encounters like this, you’ll feel more connected to nature than ever before.

Meals on wings!

A dream finally came true for me a couple of weeks ago, and I was over the moon to capture this beautiful male barn owl returning to his family with a catch. After watching him hunt tirelessly and travel such a long distance, seeing him finally succeed and return home to provide for his family made the moment feel emotional and rewarding. It was a glimpse of dedication, survival, and instinct all coming together in a single frame, which made finally capturing it feel truly unforgettable.

A truly magical moment I won’t forget!

Silent and graceful, the male barn owl swooped and glided over the long grass in search of his next meal. With young to feed, he had certainly been rushed off his wings, as I would say.

After searching the fields of my local reserve for him, only to then see him emerge from his bird box and disappear into the distance, I decided to trust my gut and find a spot to wait. Luckily, one of the hides offered the perfect view, and before long he glided beautifully close by.
I don’t think I could ever tire of watching barn owls. They are one of my favourite birds of all time, and this moment felt truly special to me.

Can you spot the barn owl?

This moment was quite special to me. Over the bank holiday weekend, I spent quite a few hours waiting, watching, hopeful to finally see the famous barn owl at my local reserve. It was made extra because this handsome male barn owl is a dad. Seeing him leave the nest box in search of food and returning triumphant with his catch, is a moment that I’ll remember forever. I wanted to capture not just the barn owl, but his territory and the landscape too, to really capture the story behind this family. Hopefully in the near future, I’ll return to see the owlets and watch as they grow and develop into the wonderful birds they are.

It has been a very busy bank holiday weekend for wildlife photography. After discovering a beautiful spot near my local nature reserve that is currently home to some very musical Common Whitethroats, I thought I’d pay them another visit to capture their beauty. I love Spring and all of the migratory birds that pay us a visit.

The heron wasn’t the only one showing off its fishing skills. The true star of the show was the kingfisher, perched proudly above the water watching the surface, and the skies, with sharp intent.

But he wasn’t alone. A mighty red kite swept over the pond, dipping down more than once to sn**ch its own breakfast. Each sudden pass sent the little kingfisher darting for cover. Hardly surprising—anyone would think twice about their morning meal with a shadow like that overhead.

Last year, while I was tucked away in a hide hoping to catch a glimpse of a kingfisher, I found myself sharing the moment with another master fisherman. A heron stood poised in the shallow waters, completely still, eyes fixed on the water waiting for just the right second to strike.

There was something captivating about the scene, the calm reflection beneath him, the soft light catching the edge of his beak. It felt like one of those rare, perfectly timed encounters where everything just comes together.
