Hitchhikers. Did you know that many creatures of the ocean live in commensal relationships with their hosts? This is a "relationship in which one organism benefits, while the other species is neither helped nor harmed." Here are two that live on the venomus, fire urchin and only found in the Indo-Pacific. The rare Coleman shrimps are found living in male and female pairs among the spines of the fire urchin. They grow to 2 cm (that's less than an inch). The zebra crab is another wonderful macro find that hitches rides on the fire urchin. The crab's stripes help to give it more camouflage in its urchin haven. It's carapace is only 1/2 inch wide. Underwater photographers love to find them, but the Coleman shrimp is definitely on our "would love to find and photograph list." Glad to have had the chance to observe and photograph these while diving in Anilao, Philippines. Take at Crystal Blue Resort in Anilao, Philippines. Shaun the Sheep. A nudibranch about the size of a ballpoint pen tip. Yes, it really is that small! This is super macro stuff. This special nudibranch is very hard to find and even harder to photograph. This shot was taken on a dive site we called the "Dumpster Site" in Lembeh, Indonesia. Thanks to the wonderful dive guides at Dive into Lembeh who know where to look and help you find these rare creatures. We could not do it without you. The Ardeadoris egretta. This dorid nudibranch is in the sea slug family. It has a beautiful white mantle with an electric orange rim. The mantle moves in a wavy pattern and the orange edge just seems to glow. For size, think a couple of inches in length. Taken in Puerto Galera, Philippines. Nestled In. This orange finned anemonefish is buried deep inside his home...the anemone. The anemone's mantle is curling in on itself, and it's green tentacles are surrounding the anemonefish. The fish just stayed there while I took several images and kept looking at me from its nestled in spot. Taken in Lembeh Strait, Indonesia. Nikon Z8 in Nauticam housing with 105mm macro lens.

A Coconut Octopus' story. During on of my dives in Lembeh, I ran across this small coconut octopus. It was in a piece of wood to start. This octopus love shells, so my dive guide put one down in the sand next to him. He slithered out and got into the shell. As you can see when splayed out across the shell, he is a small coconut octopus. He looked around for a covering and found this small piece of shell nearby. He went over and starting dragging it back to the larger piece. It was almost too big for him. He kept dropping it and almost falling over with it. I watched for about 15 minutes as he went about putting together his home. And while I watched and laughed... a lot, I also took lots of images to capture this wonderful scene. Skunked. Time for one of my favorite critters underwater...the anemonefish. This one is a skunk anemonefish inside its home, the anemone. Notice the wonderful green color of the anemone. Hello from Lembeh, Indonesia. Lembeh is know for its macro photography and more specifically muck diving. Here is a Mototi octopus hanging on to the side of a small piece of coral. It is about the size of a half dollar. It can be identified by the single blue ring on its side. The lighting in this image is made with a single flash called a snoot. Taken with a Nikon Z8 in Nauticam housing, 105 mm macro lens with a Kraken 6 diopter, and Backscatter Miniflash with snoot. www.pmurph.com
