Took a little trip to the beautiful Falkland Islands.

The Falklands Islands are not just a destination. They are an arrival at the edge of the world…. where nature leads completely, and everything else feels far.

The Falkland Islands are a remote group of islands in the South Atlantic Ocean.

They’re located about 500 km east of Patagonia (the southern part of Argentina) and southwest of South Georgia.

Politically, they’re a British Overseas Territory, governed by the United Kingdom, although Argentina also claims them.

Because of how far south they are, the islands feel very wild and isolated… often described as being “at the edge of the world.”

And then there are the penguins……
Thousands of them.

King penguins standing tall like royal sentries, Gentoo penguins darting in and out of the surf, and Rockhoppers with their wild energy, leaping across the rocks like they own the place, which, in truth, they do. Watching entire colonies move together is surreal, like stepping into a world that has existed unchanged for centuries.

A true once in a lifetime bucket list experience.

From Africa to your Wall
"Rhinos our Fat Unicorns" - preserve them to see the magic.

Rhinos have become victims of organized crime. In some of the photos taken at different times a while ago, you will see rhinos that have been dehorned. The rhino horns grow back again after sometime. Dehorning doesn't hurt the rhino – it's like cutting fingernails or trimming horses' hooves. Dehorning needs to happen every 12-24 months in order to be an effective deterrent.

In the wild, the adult black or white rhino has no predators except for humans. Sadly, rhinos are hunted and killed for their horns. Rhino horn is touted as a cure for hangovers, cancer, and impotence. Their horns are not true horns; the horns are actually made of keratin — which is the same material that makes up our hair and nails.

Therefore rhino horn is as effective at curing cancer as chewing on your fingernails.

From Africa to your wall.
“Little Dusty menace”

We had such a great time observing this baby Elephant scuffing his feet against the ground to kick up dust playing in the dirt.

Elephants are able to walk without making much of a sound, even though they are so very big, but sometimes they purposefully scuff their feet against the ground to produce sounds.

They often do this to appear more intimidating to other elephants and may combine it with other behaviours that are meant to intimidate as well, such as spreading their ears or lifting their head in order to look bigger. Elephants also sometimes scuff their feet against the ground to kick up dust when playing with other elephants. Elephants eat both grass and soil, as both contain nutrients. They also throw soil over their bodies, which helps to protect their skin from the sun and from insects.

This baby elephant was captured in the Greater Kruger.

Galagos - Cute little bush baby
A furry small animal that prefers a secretive nocturnal lifestyle. The scientific name is galago, but well known as the African bush baby. If you go on safari at night or take a stroll to the hide at camp at night, you often hear noises remotely resembling intermittent baby cries coming from the nearby bushes or trees. We were fortunate enough to see this little shy bush baby rushing back to camp after a very long self-drive day in the Kruger Park. Bush babies will howl all night long, sometimes to assert their territory. And sometimes to communicate and worn each other of danger. They are about 23-34cm in size and an omnivore.

They are fluffy animals with huge eyes. This makes them look very very cute, as if a Japanese animator drew them. Their name refers to both the sound they make and their cute apperance. In the Afrikaans language they are called the nagapie, which means “night monkey” a remarkable feature is that hey jump from branch to branch at ease, up to 2.25m, 12 times its body length.

So…next time you hear these cries watch out for this beautiful cute animals.

“A little thirst quencher”

Fun Fact:
Elephants can go up to 4 days without water. They use their trunks to suck up the water to drink which can contain up to 8 litres of water.

They normally require between 68-98 litres of water daily but may consume up to 152 litres. An adult male elephant can drink up to 212 litres of water.

Captured in Timbavati Reserve.

From Africa to your wall.
Generations.

Another amazing experience as we were able to capture a herd of elephants quenching their thirst in the hot sun. It was amazing to see and capture them almost like they were posed for a family shoot. Incredible how quick this happens. They come, they drink and they go and vanish even though they are so big.

These Elephants were captured near Lukimbi in the Kruger National Park.
