🚨 ECONOMY | XENOPHOBIA

💸 The recent wave of anti-immigrant violence is beginning to affect South Africa's economy, with businesses and economists warning of long-term consequences.

Several industries—including construction, agriculture, transport, retail and food delivery—depend heavily on migrant workers. As thousands of migrants have left affected areas or the country altogether, some businesses are reporting labour shortages and operational disruptions.

Business organisations have also warned that attacks on foreign nationals could make international investors more cautious about investing in South Africa. They argue that instability, disrupted trade and strained diplomatic relations can damage confidence in the country's economy.

Research frequently cited by economists estimates that migrants contribute significantly to South Africa's economy, with one OECD–ILO study estimating they account for around 9% of GDP through their work, businesses and spending.

The unrest has also created diplomatic tensions with countries such as Nigeria and Ghana, both of which have called for stronger action to protect their citizens. Analysts warn that prolonged tensions could affect regional trade and economic cooperation.

💬 Do you think xenophobic violence is hurting South Africa's economy more than it is helping solve unemployment?

🚨 UPDATE | GOOD HOPE CENTRE

Pastor John Anosike has pushed back against claims that his church failed to buy Cape Town's Good Hope Centre because it couldn't afford the R135 million purchase price.

The pastor says his ministry followed the City's official auction process, complied with all bidding requirements, and had the financial means to complete the transaction. His comments come after Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis said the original church-linked bid had fallen through and that another bidder was now being considered.

💬 Who do you think should have the final say on the future of the Good Hope Centre?
