This Cheetah youngster was part of a group of three clustered around a Springbok kill. Mum did all the hunting work alone but had to share the spoils with her three almost fully grown youngsters. As soon as they had eaten, they all split off in different directions to help keep a look out for the arrival of other predators

Not always something you want to see while walking through heavy bush! The Cape buffalo is without a doubt one of the most dangerous animals in Africa, and is sometimes referred to as ‘widowmaker’ or ‘the black death’. These aggressive and unpredictable beasts can weigh up to 1,000 kgs and grow up to 1.7 meters tall. They are one of the few animals in Africa that will actively stalk and kill humans if alone. Buffalos kill an estimated 200 people each year.

A bit of an anticlimax after her previous interest in the passing Springbok herd but I suppose they are probably just too small and fast to justify a hunt, especially in the middle of the day!

This lioness had just spotted a passing herd of Springbok moving across behind the game drive vehicle at Garden Route Game Lodge recently. What she did next was a complete surprise though - watch this space!

Not the most unusual of subjects, but I was playing with my new Nikon Z9 and got a picture of this Cape Robin in the garden at home. The Z9 really is an amazing piece of technology and will be posting more photos taken with it shortly.

A story in the paper this week about an elephant that totally destroyed a car in Kruger reminded me of this photo taken a couple of years ago at Indlovu Lodge. In our case, it was just teenage curiosity and no aggression at all but still gets the pulse rate racing!

In celebration of finally switching to mirrorless camera technology, a test photo of one of my aviary birds. A Gouldian Finch, indigenous to Australia but definitely one of the most beautiful finches!

This close-up of a Serval was taken at Tenikwa. Servals have the largest ears and longest legs (relative to body size) of any wild cat. These are hunting adaptations - the ears allow them to hear ultrasonic rodent sounds and the long legs enable them to jump up to 12 feet in the air to catch birds or insects.
