The past year has been life changing for South African judo star, Jasmine Martin. She has changed weight classes and gained a fresh mentality since moving to the Italian capital of Rome. So far, 2025 has shown signs of taking the 24-year-old judoka to the next level, writes MARK LEMKE.

The World Senior Championships are under way in Budapest, which will be her second competition since moving up to the -63kg division from -57kg. Martin’s first competition at this weight saw her being crowned African champion after winning the African Senior Championships in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, in April.

That performance has filled her with excitement for the World Championship challenge.

Wildschutt maps out his record-breaking path 🏃🏽‍♂️‍➡️

Adriaan Wildschutt returned to Paris on Friday night for the first time since his debut Olympic Games last year with the intention of using the Diamond League experience as another step towards his goal of medalling at the World Championships in September, writes MARK LEMKE.

However, the 27-year-old Olympian had contemplated withdrawing from the race after waking up “very sick” on Friday morning and didn’t threaten his personal best in the 5,000m (12min 55.02sec) which he set in March. He finished in 13:28.67 in Paris, in a race won by Ethiopian Yomif Kejelcha (12:47.84) and contained an array of season bests, personal bests and national records.

The life story of Paul Sampson is well documented. As a young child he was homeless, drifting along the coast of Muizenberg with his mother, who worked as a car guard to provide food and a blanket. He had no roof to protect him from the biting winter air or the dehydrating rays of the summer sun.
