End of 2017, I was asked to conceptualise the album cover for The Parlotones’ 20th year together.

Inspired by the traditional 20th anniversary gift of china/porcelain, I began thinking about longevity, commitment, fragility and the beauty of what survives leading me to the Japanese art of Kintsugi, where broken china is repaired with gold.

The band loved the concept so much, they named the album CHINA.

Original artworks from this series are now available through my Collectors Archive at a discount for a limited time until 26 September.

Eswatini, land of the Swazis, 2018

In May 2018 I drove from South Africa into what was then Swaziland, with four artworks as backdrops strapped to the roof of my RAV4 along with buckets of paint and my camera equipment.

While I was there, King Mswati III officially changed the name from Swaziland to Eswatini to mark 50 years of independence and reclaim their indigenous name.

I had driven there specifically to photograph local musicians performing at the Bushfire Festival.

And then I met her. Velemseni. Swazi musical royalty.

Her voice and her grace took my breath away. A true Lioness. She allowed me to braid her hair, dress her, paint her and photograph her. For a little while, we created something together.

The wings behind her are inspired by the Purple-crested Turaco, the national bird of Eswatini, whose crimson flight feathers hold a place in Swazi royal ceremonial tradition. Additionally, the lion and the African elephant hold immense national and royal significance, to represent the King and the Queen Mother.

It was an extraordinary journey.

KING OF SPADES

It was a dull day in Autumn. I made the background over two days in my Scottish friend’s basement and grabbed his landlord to stand in as The King. It was a fine few days and we were merry indeed.

Sleep when you’re dead. ♠️🪏

It’s been a decade.

Between 2016 and 2018, I created these twelve archetypes — some of the first works through which I began exploring the human figure as a vessel for something beyond the individual.

They shaped me as much as I shaped them.

For the next six weeks, I am releasing a selection of works from that time at reduced Collector’s Studio prices, with insured delivery within South Africa included. Available for this limited period only, as I make space for what is coming next.

Several editions will be permanently closed when the release ends.

Yesterday was Earth Day. 🌍

A reminder of what sustains us and what we are called to protect.

I’m SO honoured to be part of the Art for Conservation Auction taking place on 1 May at Netherwood Farm, Midlands, where we come together in support of conservation through our work and services.

Here’s a few of my favourite pieces from the catalogue, along with my own, Prins and Prinses Fynbos. Rooted in this landscape, in wild growth, in the delicate balance our nature kingdom.
