Here’s a great pit lane moment from the 1975 Rand Spring Trophy at Kyalami. 🏁 Gary Ainscough waiting patiently in his Echlin-sponsored #16 Lotus 69 while the crew gets ready to fire it up.

The Lotus 69 had such sleek, understated lines, and seeing it in full period Echlin livery sitting on the Kyalami tarmac is pure 70s motorsport gold. Ben van Rensburg captured the quiet pre-race atmosphere perfectly in this shot, from the exposed engine bay to the water towers in the background.

Another fantastic action angle from the Rand Spring Trophy back in August '75! 🏁

Nolly Limberis brings the bright yellow #20 McLaren M10 through the sweep, leading a tight train composed of Dave Hart ( #22 Surtees TS8), Gary Ainscough ( #16 Lotus 69), and Andre Verwey bringing up the rear in his red #18 March FA.

Just look at the spectators lined up on the banking taking in the noise. Motoprint.co.za

Formula Atlantic meets F5000. Kyalami, August 1975.

Andre Verwey in the red March ( #18) and Dave Hart in the blue Surtees ( #22) getting ready to head out for the Rand Spring Trophy. It was a golden era of local open-wheel racing, where a fascinating variety of grids kept fans packed along the banks. Look at those classic red team jackets and the simple, zero-nonsense prep.

Dave Charlton. Lucky Strike McLaren M23. Kyalami, winter of '75. 🏎️

The M23 is arguably one of the greatest F1 chassis ever built, and Charlton knew exactly how to make it sing on local soil. Look closely at the background of this one and you can see a Team Gunston car trying desperately to close the gap.

Ben van Rensburg captured an absolute beaut here. Motoprint.co.za

Who was lucky enough to stand on the banks and watch Charlton and the guys fight it out in the 70s?

You can’t talk about South African motorsport history without mentioning the legendary Team Gunston cars. 🏁 Here is Guy Tunmer perfectly positioning his Lotus 72 during the Rand Winter Trophy at Kyalami back in July 1975.

The Lotus 72 is widely regarded as one of the most iconic F1 designs ever built, but seeing it finished in that famous local orange-and-brown livery is something really special. Ben van Rensburg captured this one beautifully as Tunmer sweeps past the barriers, with a classic Lucky Strike sign visible on the hill behind him.

Here’s a proper look at Roy Klomfass getting the job done at Kyalami during the 1975 Rand Winter Trophy. He’s steering the iconic Lexington-sponsored Chevron B25, and you’ve got to love how that crisp July winter sun catches the front wing and helmet.

The Lexington orange-and-white cars are a huge part of SA motorsport folklore, and seeing this Chevron out on the tarmac is pure nostalgia. Ben van Rensburg did a brilliant job tracking the car through the corner for this shot.

You can almost hear the Chevy V8 roaring in this one. 🏁

This is Dave Hart throwing his Surtees TS8 through the corners at Kyalami during the Rand Winter Trophy back in July '75. There was nothing quite like a crisp, cold winter's afternoon out at the track to get those big engines breathing perfectly and putting down some serious power.

This is as iconic as it gets for South African motorsport history. 🏁

Dave Charlton strapped into the legendary Lucky Strike McLaren M23 ( #1) while the mechanics give it a final check on the Kyalami grid back in 1975. Just behind him, you can see Tony Martin's #15 BP-sponsored Chevron waiting for the off.

The M23 is easily one of the most successful F1 designs of the 70s, and seeing it in full local livery out in the sunshine is just brilliant. Ben van Rensburg captured the pre-race grid tension perfectly here, you can practically hear the engines warming up.

If you want to add a serious piece of local racing heritage to your garage or office wall, the high-res print is officially live on the shop.

Now this is how you handle the Kyalami heat on the grid. 🏁

Here is Ian Scheckter keeping cool under an umbrella while sitting in the beautiful Lexington-sponsored Tyrrell 007 ( #4) before the start of the 1975 Republic Day Trophy. You can feel the anticipation, mechanics doing last-minute checks on the tyres, crowds mingling, and the winter sun beating down on the tarmac.

It’s an incredible behind-the-scenes look at one of South Africa’s legendary racing brothers in a truly iconic local livery.

We’ve got the high-res digital image ready for print of this archive classic ready for the workshop or study. www.motoprint.co.za

Who remembers watching Ian Scheckter throw this Tyrrell around the old Kyalami layout?
