Old Phuket Town is the name of the lively old town district in the heart of Phuket. It is famous for its colorful houses in the Sino-Portuguese style (also known as Chinese Baroque), some of which are over 100 years old.

The area is only a few blocks in size and actually very manageable, but you can quickly get lost in the cozy hustle and bustle of the streets, be it in the countless shops or with a tasty drink in the inviting bars and cafes.

It is teeming with bright colors, exotic smells, busy people and all kinds of goods that are offered for everyday life. Some are useful, some are just a dust collector that ends up on the shelf at home; so you can still take a little piece of this beautiful part of the city home with you as a souvenir.

In 1866, the first Diamonds were discovered in the area around Kimberley in South Africa. A short time later, the first Diamond was found in the parent rock, which was later named “Kimberlite”.

The discovery of the 83-carat “Star of South Africa” in 1869 was what triggered the largest diamond rush ever seen. Thousands of people came from all over the world in search of fortune and wealth, and the town of “Vooruitzigt” or “New Rush” was founded. After just a few months, the newly founded town already had more than 30,000 inhabitants.

“New Rush” was renamed “Kimberley” on July 5, 1873. It was the British Colonial Minister, Earl of Kimberley, who gave it its name, and the igneous rock Kimberlite is named after the town “Kimberley”.

Most Diamonds were found in the hill “Colesberg Kopje”, which became smaller every day due to mining and eventually disappeared in a very short time. The famous “Big Hole” was created.

Today, Kimberley’s heyday is long gone. An interesting insight into life during the time of the great diamond rush can be found in the Kimberley Mine Museum with a replica of the town as it looked back then.

The “Big Hole”, from which diamonds were mined until 1914, can also be admired and walked through in the museum. With its depth of 225 meters, a circumference of 1.6 kilometers and a surface area of 17 hectares, the “Big Hole” is certainly one of the most impressive open-cast mining holes and the most photographed object in the town.

For me, this is a reason to dedicate this space to the impressive visitor platform with the walkway over the “Big Hole”. Although it is so impressive and can be seen from afar, it unfortunately receives little attention from the numerous visitors.

However, I think it is definitely worth photographing.

The photo was taken on February 7, 2024 in the Mining Museum in the city of Kimberley in South Africa.

Your mouth will start to water and you can immediately taste the fresh, Mediterranean cuisine.

Tomatoes, garlic and chilli are an important ingredient in most traditional dishes and you can buy them fresh or, as here, dried in many shops.

If there are any leftovers after cooking, they make a beautiful decoration for any kitchen and wait patiently until they are used for the next bolognese, salsa di pomodoro, paella or any other delicious meal.

Bon appetit!

Even if this picture looks pretty static at first glance, you will be captivated if you look at it for a longer period of time. Deeper and deeper in, you can feel the enormous power and movement that is omnipresent here in this tunnel.

There is only a brief moment of silence before the next train pulls up on one of the tracks and the hustle and bustle of people getting on and off, commuters and tourists starts all over again.

All that only for a short moment, but in a regular rhythm and precise to the second.

This view into the tube remains hidden from most passengers, however, as every effort is made to leave the platform as quickly as possible and come back to the surface.

Only the waiting travelers and the prudent are granted this brief fascinating glimpse of the underground, a brief moment of stillness that stimulates your imagination by telling countless stories of travelers.

This picture was taken in a subway station known as “T” or just “The Subway” in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, on August 12, 2022.

Built in 1897, it was the first subway system in the United States.

If you drive south along the small road from Hondeklip Bay along the sea, you can see this primeval relic lying on the stones on the shore from afar. At first glance it looks like a giant dinosaur fish whose skeleton is slowly crumbling.

But if you look closely, you realize that these iron remains belong to the Aristea, which ran aground here on July 4, 1945 and is now slowly corroding away as a shipwreck.

Originally built in Scotland as a fish trawler, she was used as a minesweeper in WWII. Now it serves as a tourist attraction right next to a large barbecue area and stimulates the imagination of young and old visitors, who tell all sorts of sailor’s yarns during the braai (= South African barbecue).

A fairy tale from 1001 Nights.

Here in Oman, the stories from the Orient come alive and you can immerse yourself in the mysterious world of 1001 Nights.

In the streets and in the souks is a hustle and bustle, the scent of life, as the “white gold” frankincense is also called, is omnipresent and with just a little imagination you can find yourself thousands of years ago as Queen Saba docked in the harbor and loaded spices and the precious resin on their ships as a gift for their visit to King Solomon in Jerusalem.

Today’s fairy tales are different, yet the same. Precious spices and noble perfumes are offered in the souk, the extraordinary landscape and the impressive architecture captivate every visitor.

You will also be enchanted by this masterpiece here in the picture. This is one of the biggest chandeliers in the world. With its 1,122 lamps and millions of Swarovski crystals, it looks like a small town itself, like a magnificent temple where you can see the Genie from the magic lamp wandering through the numerous rooms of this castle of light.
If you look into it long enough, your wish emerges, like Aladdin once did, just rub this lamp, just once…

This masterpiece of light art hangs in the Great Sultan Qabos Mosque in Muscat and is definitely worth a visit, not only if you believe in the fairy tales of 1001 Nights.

Here you can feel the true magic of the Orient.

A new photo is online: LET´S PLAY!

Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated areas in the world. More than 7 million inhabitants live in just 1,113 square kilometers. The city is also considered to have one of the highest living costs in the world. So it is not surprising that Hong Kong is also one of the cities that has the most high-rise buildings, where people live and work in a very small space.

There are areas in the city where you only see a small piece of Heaven when you’re walking down the streets as a pedestrian. You can only get a view from the top.

In the labyrinth of one of these concrete deserts, after a few detours and wrong turns, I discovered this hidden basketball court.

The playground with a basketball field, several tennis courts and other areas for ball games is built on the entire roof of a huge 2-storey car park, offering the numerous residents the opportunity to see a little more of the sky while doing recreational sports in the gigantic residential complex.

This picture was taken on March 10th, 2017 during my trip to Hong Kong.

"TABLE MOUNTAIN"
When it comes to Cape Town, the media likes to get creative to give this special place an appropriate name. The most colorful, the most diverse, the most beautiful, the most liberal, the one with the best wines, THE gateway to Africa and much more.

Without a doubt, the sight of Cape Town with Table Mountain (afrikaans:Tafelberg) awakens very special longings and memories for many tourists.

For the Capetonians, as the residents of Cape Town are called, this sight is omnipresent and normal everyday life. Nothing special anymore, one would think, if one observes the lively and hectic hustle and bustle here at the waterfront during the day. Only the tourists reveal themselves because they are the ones who look up and enjoy the unique sight and take pictures.

But when the sun slowly sets and the hustle and bustle decreases, when you start the cozy part of the evening in one of the numerous bars and restaurants, then everyone suddenly notices this unique atmosphere and the special mood that emanates from this place and that everyone in draws the spell.

And then the locals slowly start looking up and pausing at this really special place.

There are definitely millions of similar photos of the waterfront with a view of Table Mountain that every tourist has taken.

My photo here is unique and proves that the place is instantly recognizable and memories are evoked, even if the image only shows blurred outlines and no details. A perfect image for my Cityscapes category.

This color coordinate stand for the color “International Orange”. But even without this name, the building that bears the color is world-famous. Anyone who has seen it with their own eyes will not forget and will immediately know which building was photographed here.

I guess that 99.9% of all pictures show this beautiful bridge in its entirety. Only a few pay attention to the numerous details that make this masterpiece of architecture so unique.

This photo was created with this ulterior motive: to bring details and perspectives into the foreground, which only become visible at second glance and can only be discovered on closer inspection. A call to everyone to pause next time and take the time for an intensive contemplation.

And for all those who haven’t seen the Golden Gate Bridge with their own eyes yet: It has this wonderful name because it spans the Golden Gate, as the strait in San Francisco Bay is called. It has been given its “warning color” HEX so that it can be seen clearly in fog and other poor visibility conditions.

This photo was taken on September 4th, 2022 in the middle of the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco.

YELLOW
CITY GATE
posted by FRANZ 23. January 2022 0 comments

Pittsburgh (in the US State Pennsylvania) is said to have more bridges than Venice.

I didn’t count them, but the many bridges that lead into the “City of Steel” do indeed shape the urban image. Each one is unique in its design, appearance and colouring.

But they all have in common that they lead the visitor into the center like a city gate. You have to take this one path, which the bridge specifies, to get to your destination.
As strict and unyielding as the bridge sets the path – you have no other choice, if you want to get to the other end – they are also open and free, because they connect here with there, inside with outside.

This bridge, the Andy Warhol Bridge, takes you directly to the Andy Warhol Museum. But the bridge itself is already a work of art in its own right, you just have to change the perspective.

Nova Scotia has a lot to offer. Not only the beautiful capital Halifax with its numerous things to do, but also beautiful and seemingly endless nature. No wonder, after all, this region of Canada is also one of the country’s three maritime provinces. True to its name.

It doesn’t need much planning or effort to explore the breathtaking area. Wherever you like, you just stop and enjoy the breathtaking view.

This is how this picture was taken, on August 2nd, 2019, at Campbell Point Beach Park.

The red splash on the buoy is a real eye-catcher.
