Reels vs Video
A question that I get asked a lot.
What is the difference between a reel and a video.
A reel and a video are both video content, but theyโre built for different contexts and use cases:
1. Format & Length
- Reel: Short-form, vertical video. Usually 15s to 90s on Instagram/Facebook, up to 10 min on some platforms now. Built for quick, scrollable consumption.
- Video: General term. Can be any length, any orientation - vertical, horizontal, square. A YouTube video, a 2-hour movie, a 30s ad all count as videos.
2. Platform & Discovery
- Reel: Designed for algorithmic feeds like Instagram Reels, Facebook Reels, and similar to TikTok. The platform pushes it to people who donโt follow you, so discovery is the main point.
- Video: Can live anywhere - YouTube, websites, email, file storage. Discovery depends more on search, subscriptions, or direct links.
3. Editing & Style
- Reel: Usually edited fast, with music, text overlays, transitions, effects, and trending audio built in. The UI expects you to use the in-app editor.
- Video: Editing style is open. Can be cinematic, unedited raw footage, presentations, tutorials. Youโre not limited to app-based tools.
4. Intent
- Reel: Hook attention fast. Made for entertainment, trends, quick tips, behind-the-scenes. The goal is retention in the first 3 seconds.
- Video: Can be for entertainment, but also education, storytelling, documentation, ads, live events. The goal varies with length and context.
Think of it this way: All reels are videos, but not all videos are reels. A reel is a specific format/subtype optimized for short, vertical, music-driven, feed-based viewing.
