Bad weather makes good photos. There, I said it.

Weather is NOT small talk when you're a photographer. On a hike through the Drakensberg, one of the key lessons was just that: bad weather can make for incredible photographs. Those strange weather patterns, dramatic clouds, mist and changing light can turn a nice landscape into something you actually want to hang on the wall. But here's the important part: know what you're dealing with.

Check the forecast. Understand your location. Think about how the weather will affect your subject before you arrive. Especially on safari.

If it has been pouring with rain, don't assume the animals will politely gather at their usual watering holes for your photographic convenience.

They might be drinking from puddles a few metres away while you're sitting at the watering hole wondering where everybody went.
You haven't been abandoned. You've simply been outsmarted by a puddle.

The weather isn't always the problem. Sometimes, it's the reason the photograph works.
Just remember to protect your gear. Rain makes for good photos.
Wet camera electronics make for expensive conversations.

We live in a country that has an almost unfair amount of variety.

Mountains.
Coastlines.
Bushveld.
Desert landscapes.
Cities.
Small towns.
Wildlife.
Culture.

And enough dramatic skies to keep a photographer busy for several lifetimes.
So for Tourism Month, here's the challenge:

Explore your own country like you've never seen it before.
You don't have to book the most expensive trip or travel thousands of kilometres. Start closer to home.
Find a place you've never photographed. Visit somewhere you've only ever driven past. Go at a different time of day. Take a different lens. Look beyond the obvious viewpoint.
And when you photograph it, don't just ask: “Is this beautiful?”
Ask: “What makes this place different from anywhere else?”

That's the photograph worth chasing.
South Africa is already full of stories. Your job is to notice them.

And because birthdays are better with presents, every sale comes with a free collectable Free Your Creativity magnet or keychain!

Deals end 6 September. After that, the birthday cake is officially finished...

This squirrel gets it!
When you're a photographer or creator, collecting files is basically part of the job. RAWs, video clips, backups, exports and approximately 47 versions of the same edit all need somewhere to live.

Luckily, SanDisk has the storage to keep your digital peanut stash growing.

Ever edited a photo that looked perfect on screen... then printed it and thought, "What happened?"

You're not alone. Colour calibration helps create a more accurate and consistent workflow, from the moment you start editing to the moment your photograph becomes a physical print.
Our latest blog breaks down the basics of colour calibration, why your monitor matters, and how to avoid those frustrating colour surprises.

What you see should be much closer to what you get, read it here: https://www.outdoorphoto.co.za/a/blog/post/colour-calibration-guide

Your camera gear has enough to worry about without adding a trip down the stairs to the list.

The B&W Case Type 1000 with Padded Dividers is made for keeping your smaller photography essentials protected, organised and ready to travel. The tough case gives you a solid layer of protection, while the padded dividers let you create a setup that actually fits your gear instead of making everything play Tetris.

Why it earns a place in your kit:
- Padded dividers let you customise the interior around your gear.
- Hard-shell protection helps shield your equipment from the knocks that come with being out and about.
- Compact design makes it easy to carry without lugging around a suitcase disguised as a camera bag.
- Organised storage means less digging around when you need that one cable, accessory or piece of kit immediately.

Protecting your gear shouldn't require a second full-time job.
Your camera gear travels. Your case should be ready for it.

Consider this your sign to go outside and take photos.

Spring brings new colour, fresh light and plenty of excuses to spend a few more hours behind the camera. Try photographing flowers up close. Look for new wildlife. Chase the golden hour. Revisit a familiar location and see how differently it looks.

And if you come home with 400 photographs of one flower...
Well, that's between you and your memory card.

Happy Spring Day!

When your Marketing Manager goes on holiday, there's a pretty good chance a camera is coming with her.

Michelle took the Canon EOS R6 Mark III paired with the RF 100-500mm and came back with a collection of wildlife photographs that make us want to book a holiday immediately.

It's easy to talk about cameras and lenses when it's your job. The real test is taking them out into the world and seeing what you can create with them.

Safe to say, Michelle understood the assignment!
