📢 Celebrating Women’s Month
Every August, South Africa celebrates Women’s Month, paying tribute to the more than 20,000 women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 in protest against the extension of Pass Laws to women. This year’s commemoration, held under the theme “Celebrating 30 Years of Democracy Towards Women’s Development,” marks the 68th anniversary of that historic march.
Women’s Month celebrates women as active agents of change and social transformation. It provides an opportunity to reflect on our achievements, address ongoing challenges, and mobilize support for the further development of women. This year’s Women’s Month coincides with the country’s commemoration of 30 Years of Freedom and Democracy, making it a pivotal moment for collective reflection on our progress in empowering and advancing women’s rights in our democratic journey.
Additionally, we celebrate 30 years of the Women’s Charter, established to drive equality. During this month, we will advance the Women’s Charter for Accelerated Development, formulated in 2021, to accelerate economic reforms and unlock women’s economic progress. Numerous socio-economic empowerment programs and events will take place, including a trade expo, fashion show, and social dialogues.
Kumnkani Mhlontlo Local Municipality will be hosting a two-day Women’s Day celebration on the 8th and 9th of August. Join us in honouring the remarkable women of our nation! 🌸✨
