The Outeniqua Pass is the scenic route that connects George on the coast to Oudtshoorn in the Little Karoo. Originally built between 1942 and 1951, this modern pass replaced the steep and narrow Montagu Pass, offering a safer way to travel. Although it has been updated over the years, it's still prone to rockfalls and trucking accidents. In addition, the higher sections often get heavy rain and thick mountain fog, which can make driving hazardous. Be aware and expect occasional closures due to weather or accidents.

The Outeniqua Pass has 40 twists and turns, many with angles over 90 degrees which makes it heaps of fun if you’re THAT kind of driver. While the road is designed well, sticking to the speed limits is crucial for safety. If you're heading south, there are some breathtaking viewpoints. Make sure to stop at the third viewpoint from the summit, known as "The 4 Passes," where you can see all four historic passes, including one that's nearly 200 years old. The pass stretches 13.3 km with a climb of 581 meters.

Meiringspoort is one of South Africa's top spots to visit, and it's easy to see why. This stunning road winds through beautiful landscapes and has a fascinating history. Despite tough times with floods and landslides, skilled engineers built an amazing road through this scenic pass. Along the way, you’ll find an Interpretive Centre, a breathtaking waterfall, and the charming village of De Rust.

Driving through Meiringspoort is an adventure, with 63 bends, corners, and curves to navigate. While the road is in great shape, you'll need to stay focused, as there are no safety shoulders, and there can be lots of heavy trucks. For a smoother drive, visit on weekends or public holidays when there's less traffic. Be sure to make plenty of stops to soak in the incredible scenery and enjoy one of South Africa's most captivating spots.

The 2012 Ferrari FF, a stunning four-seat grand tourer with a unique shooting brake design. Featuring Ferrari's first-ever four-wheel-drive system, the FF boasts a powerful 6.3-liter V12 engine, accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds. Its luxurious interior seats four adults comfortably, making it perfect for both everyday driving and long journeys as we have seen on the Cape1000 tour this year. Roll your windows down and turn off your radio when see this car. The sound is just amazing.

From November 1975 to January 1986, Mercedes-Benz introduced the W123 series, a line of executive cars. Surpassing its predecessor, the W114, the W123 became Mercedes' most successful model, with 2.7 million units sold by the end of production in 1985 for saloons and 1986 for coupés and estates. In this series, 'C' stands for 'Coupé,' 'E' for ‘Einspritzung’, German for 'fuel injection', and 'W123' denotes the saloon or sedan model.

The W123 series, including the 280CE model, was renowned for its luxury, durability, and comfort and some enthusiasts might have modified and raced these cars in various vintage racing events. This 280CE in the green Petronas colors look absolutely fantastic and was a lot of fun to shoot in Clarence Drive.

The 1958 Corvette. 'Corvette' is a very familiar name to us all, thanks to pictures and American movies. But have you actually seen a ’58 Corvette? Photos don't do it justice. You have to walk around it to appreciate its lines, colors, shape, and look. Don't confuse it with the Stingray, which came out in ’63.

The owner of this very rare car, Clinton van Vuuren, explained that the red color of the car is called Signet Red and represents the post office wax that the American Postal Service used in 1958. In 1957, Corvettes had two headlights, but in 1958 they switched to a four-headlight system. Clinton mentioned how much he loves the exhaust pipes that go through the rear bumper and the washboard vents on the bonnet, which really add to the classic look of the car.

The inside of the car reminds him of sitting in the cockpit of a fighter plane, which makes me, someone who has never sat in a fighter plane cockpit, really want to sit behind the wheel of this car. This car is 100% original and is kept in incredible condition. For some of us, the sound and performance of the car might be what we want to show off, but for Clinton, it's all about making people look and smile when they see the car, reminding them of better times.

Thank you to Clinton van Vuuren for showing off this beautiful car and for sharing some information about his love for it.

Built by Italian legends from 1990 to 2001, this beast redefined speed with a top end of over 320km/h (200mph). Named after the devil himself, the Diablo left a fiery legacy before passing the torch to the Murciélago.

Thank you to Silvio Scribante for bringing this absolute legend to the Cape1000.

Tradouw Pass, a 16km scenic drive through the stunning Langeberg mountains. Originally built by Thomas Bain, this pass connects Barrydale and Swellendam, offering breathtaking views and historic charm. It has recently been renovated, so the road is now smooth again and puts this pass undoubtedly in the Top 20 tarred passes in the Western Cape on an overall rating.

Since living fairly close to Barrydale and Montagu, I have driven Tradouw Pass many times but not enough to know all the corners by heart. I have however, sat shotgun in a car with someone who has and knowing this pass by heart makes all the difference. Tradouw is long and technical enough to challenge your driving skills but short enough to make you want to drive it again.

For the driver who likes to give Google Maps ETA a run for its money, this a great pass to drive and its also great for the person who loves a slow scenic drive as the view is nothing short of breathtaking.

Like many of you can affirm, driving isn’t just getting about getting into your car and going from point A to point B. To the majority of us, its much more than that. The feel of your car, the smell, the sound, the vibration, the performance and if you are lucky enough to drive any of the cars showcased in the Cape1000 this year, the looks you get from other road goers. Maybe its the road you’re on, like Clarence Drive, right next to ocean with its variety of corners and 21km of pure driving pleasure.

“A car is more than just a mode of transportation; it's a reflection of a man's personality, style, and sometimes, his aspirations." - Unknown

This was day one of the Cape1000 2024 and I thought I’d try catching some cars as they pass by on their way to Swellendam. The shot of this stunning car was taken just a few km before Swellendam on the R62.

Even though this was during the middle of the day and I got a really bad “boere tan”, I managed to catch this beauty flying by. Worth it.
