So I’ve been doubting myself as a photographer for quite some time – mainly because there’s really nothing to shoot around here in Abu Dhabi especially if you can’t drive. Grassiana has really been pushing me though to rediscover my creativity and asked if I wanted to take some pictures. These are far from perfect (on my end) but this one photo shoot has a reawakened my passion for photography. I know the focus is off on some and I know I have a lot to learn especially about bo***ir techniques, but it’s hard not to get excited about learning when I have such an amazing and beautiful model to work with… I thank you so much Grassiana for reminding me that I may be blind but I’m not broken.

I also welcome any constructive criticism anyone might have help me in the learning process. You’re not gonna hurt my feelings if you tell me a better way or process.

Goota get creative when you’re still under quarantine! This is a macro shot of oil and water backlit. I put a glass dish over a work light, added oil, water, and a few drops of green food coloring then wicked it like crazy. As the solution slowed, some really wild things started happening. The different liquids grabbed the light in very different ways and sometimes seemed to pull it from its place.

The only post processing done here was BW conversion, slight denoise, and highlight drop. I’m not sure what caused all the lines around the main light and on the right edge, unless its imperfections in the glass or where the wick might have dragged the oil

This image is being submitted to Justin Mott’s first photography challenge, a really cool guy I just came across by chance during a late night YT binge. For those who are seeing this as part of that assignment, I look forward to seeing everyone’s work, and I welcome any criticism you might have to help me as I grow as a photographer. Being visually impaired, , I will do my best to also offer commentary on images, but please forgive me if I misspeak or miss something in your image.

About this image: Our cat, Eudora, likes to wrap herself up in the blanket during family TV time. I can always feel when she is about to emerge, and I can occasionally catch a glint in her eye before she pounces on String Bean, her favorite toy. (This is due to the “Paradox” of Peripheral Vision” for people with macular degeneration). I was trying to focus on the “natural” aspect of Justin’s instructions, so I held on to my camera while watching Dr. Who reruns on a 12 foot screen (the benefits of blindness:)). The sound of the theremin hit the opening credits, and Eudora knew it was time for belly-rubs before seeking out the alien life forms under our refrigerator. I know the image is noisy, but I think I caught a good moment with the implied golden mean of the blanket to her eye and leading lines to the center plane of the image. My concern is that it might be a bit flat or compressed with too wide a DOF. I also don’t think the Animal EyeAF quite hit her eye. I look forward to any and all comments.

Finals week! I was deep into grading "truly inspiring" essays from college freshmen when I took the much needed smoke break after 20 essays. It took a minute to realize that the light on the horizon was not just another unnecessary street light, but a harvest moon. Seems like there is always one light shining through.
