Born in Syria in 1988, Khaled Bakkora came from a very difficult cultural background, and suffered from the long exhausting war in Syria, He lost his successful job, education and family connection for 6 years. His interest in photography started 8 years ago with a small project on the impact of shadows. Moving to Dubai helped take his photography further, and he become a member in Union Arab of photographers, also his photography work has been published and exhibited in many different countries such as: UAE, Netherlands, Serbia, Spain, USA, Greece, Lebanon and others. Khaled had to start his life from scratch, career, education and photography, and he was fortunate to visit many counties where he reflected his interests in landscape and architecture photography in photographs, his main focus is still the conceptual photography where he believes that photography is a double-sided beauty where both the observer and the photographer do not feel the urge of using vocabulary. It’s the art of nonverbal story-telling. It allows the unnoticeable places, objects, or people to be artistically noticed. When the observer is soulfully, visually, or artistically satisfied, his mission is accomplished. In the end what matters to him is the feeling when you see it .

This mosque has heard 1300 years of prayers.
A Roman temple before that. A Byzantine cathedral before that.
The walls remember everything. I just tried to match their memory.

I wanted these images to feel like they were already old when I took them.
Because in a place like this, the present is the youngest thing in the room.
Umayyad , , 2026.

Spent a day testing the HUAWEI Pura 90s Pro Max, mostly against harsh sun and deep shadow. Old stone, rust, dense green leaves, and the color held every time. No blown highlights, no muddy shadows, just the scene as it actually looked.

People ask me what Syria looks like.
I show them this.
Courtyards that held centuries of laughter, trade, and prayer. Doors carved by hands that understood beauty as a form of worship. Alleys that whisper the names of everyone who ever walked through them.

Behind every door in Old Damascus, there’s a world the street doesn’t know about.
A courtyard. A fountain. A family’s whole universe folded into stone and wood and light.
I walked these alleys as if reading a book I’d forgotten I loved.
Some places don’t just hold memories. They hold you.

Damascus is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth.
Ten thousand years of human presence, compressed into these arches, these tiles, these wooden ceilings that watched empires rise and fall.
A city that outlived every force that tried to define it.
I came back to photograph it. I left humbled.

A bus that carried lives once, now carrying only silence and rust.
A fridge in a ruined room, door open, golden hour pouring in like it doesn’t know the family is gone.
A window that still holds a frame, even when everything behind it has collapsed.
Light doesn’t mourn. It just keeps coming.
Maybe that’s the lesson!

I left my home in 2011.
I came back in 2026 with a camera, because I didn’t know what else to bring.
The streets remembered me before I remembered them.
Some things were gone. Some things refused to leave.

These walls used to hold families. Laughter. Arguments. Dinner smells. Now they hold only silence, and the sky where a ceiling once was.
I came back to after 15 years. I didn’t know whether to or just stand and cry. I did both.
