Kamalapur Railway Station, Dhaka. Some of the men sleeping in the parked carriages were waiting for their train. Others perhaps had nowhere else to go. As a stranger, it isn’t always easy to tell — and assumptions are dangerous things.

Silau and his golden eagle have hunted together for years in the Altai mountains. Even as it flapped around his head, Silau was completely at ease – at times, there was a sense of intimacy as he calmed the bird.

Testimonials, what people think

Attending Elements 2025 was a transformative experience, thanks to the incredible dedication, warmth, and expertise of Mali Davies. The accommodation was warm, clean and well equipped. We were nourished with delicious home-cooked meals. Mali’s ability to read the weather, select inspiring locations, and offer thoughtful, personalised guidance allowed me to grow in confidence and creativity every single day. His calm manner and willingness to share his knowledge made the workshop feel supportive and empowering rather than overwhelming. Mali cultivated an atmosphere of focus, community, and joy which made the workshop truly unforgettable. I left feeling more connected—to my photography, to the landscape, and to the wonderful group of people with whom I shared the experience. I cannot recommend this workshop highly enough.

ELEMENTS SCOTLAND 2024

I returned from Scotland a few weeks ago after a wonderful 6 nights on a residential photography workshop with Mali.Any apprehensions I had about spending a week away from home, in the company of strangers, were very quickly forgotten. Mali and my fellow workshop attendees made me feel at ease and made such lovely company. The accommodation was spacious, clean and comfortable and our host Lynn, couldn’t have been more accommodating in making sure we had everything we needed.Mali was the perfect workshop leader. His enthusiasm is infectious. His passion, inspiring. His knowledge, and ability to communicate his wisdom, would be difficult to equal.I booked onto the workshop with no expectations, other than having the opportunity to distance myself from current demands and distractions. Thanks to Mali, I came away from the experience feeling energised, motivated and eager to develop further as a photographer, but also with some beautiful images and very happy memories.

The Samay is one of three traditional figures in the mythology of the Jola people of The Gambia and Senegal. Wielding a stick, he maintains order in the community and is believed to know everything that happens in a village. Several times a year he presides over folk festivals, bringing the community together.

After a festival, he catches the minibus home.

He’d been swinging from the door, playing his audience, then vanished. I kept my camera trained on the gap, waiting. A few seconds later he reappeared – mid-air, grinning.

In the Alfama district of Lisbon, artist Camilla Watson prints portraits of elderly residents directly onto the walls of the buildings they’ve spent their lives in. This is Dona Antonia – her painted window barely distinguishable from the real ones beside her. She has probably looked out of a window like this her whole life.

Mullick Ghat Flower Market, Kolkata – a riot of colour and constant clamour. Yet within the chaos are small pockets of calm as hands reach for flower heads and place them gently in a bag.
