Today marks the 254th anniversary of the death of Ahmad Shah Durrani

Today commemorates the 254th death anniversary of the great Afghan ruler, conqueror, and state-builder who founded the Afghan state in Kandahar in 1747 and established the Durrani Empire.

Known to generations of Afghans as Ahmad Shah Baba, Ahmad Shah Durrani is remembered for uniting Afghan tribes, laying the foundations of a centralized state, and elevating Afghanistan into a major regional power. At its height, his empire stretched from the Oxus River to northern India and from Khorasan to Kashmir.

Ahmad Shah Durrani passed away in 1772 and was buried in Kandahar, where his mausoleum stands beside the Shrine of the Sacred Cloak, one of Afghanistan’s most revered historical landmarks.
