We are very happy to announce a new chapter of the
Gjon Mili Video Art Festival.

For the first time, the festival launches its international residency program in Dhërmi, Albania! A one-month experience dedicated to, video art, experimental film, and contemporary visual practices.

The Gjon Mili Video Art Festival Residency Program invites video artists, experimental filmmakers, short film directors, documentary and hybrid documentary artists, moving image artists, immersive and multimedia artists, and audiovisual and projection-based practitioners to gather in Dhërmi, Albania for a one-month residency May 1 to May 30 - 2027, focused on contemporary moving image practices and experimental visual storytelling.
Designed as an immersive artistic experience connected to the Gjon Mili International Video Art Festival, the residency offers artists the opportunity to work closely with nature, landscape, light, and local community life while developing their artistic practice.
The program encourages participants to connect with the Mediterranean spirit of Dhërmi, where sea, light, stone architecture, local traditions, and everyday village rhythms become part of the artistic process, while artists are creatively nourished by nature, the surrounding landscape, and the local food culture of southern Albania.

Through a fictional psychotherapeutic session with the late Albanian dictator Enver Hoxha, State of Preparedness explores the psychological and physical legacy of Albania’s militarized past. Drawing on personal testimonies, interviews, and field research, the film reflects on the country’s vast network of military bunkers as both architectural remnants and metaphors for collective fear, repression, and unresolved trauma. The narrative blends archival memory with present-day imagery, inviting the viewer to confront the fragile line between visible structures and invisible wounds.
Developed during a residency in Tirana and initially presented at the Tirana Architecture Triennale, the film meditates on the interplay between the conscious and unconscious, the seen and unseen, inspired by Sigmund Freud’s iceberg theory and grounded in lived experience.

Përmes një seance psikoterapeutike fiktive me diktatorin e ndjerë shqiptar Enver Hoxha, State of Preparedness eksploron trashëgiminë psikologjike dhe fizike të së kaluarës së militarizuar të Shqipërisë. Duke u mbështetur në dëshmi personale, intervista dhe kërkim në terren, filmi reflekton mbi rrjetin e gjerë të bunkerëve ushtarakë në vend, si mbetje arkitekturore dhe njëkohësisht si metafora të frikës kolektive, represionit dhe traumave të pazgjidhura. Narrativa ndërthur kujtesën arkivore me imazhe të së tashmes, duke e ftuar shikuesin të përballet me vijën e brishtë mes strukturave të dukshme dhe plagëve të padukshme. I zhvilluar gjatë një rezidence artistike në Tirana dhe i prezantuar fillimisht në Tirana Architecture Triennale, filmi mediton mbi ndërveprimin mes të vetëdijshmes dhe të pavetëdijshmes, të dukshmes dhe të padukshmes i frymëzuar nga teoria e ajsbergut e Sigmund Freud dhe i rrënjosur në përvojën e jetuar.

A poetic video art work unfolding through the Lucanian “calanchi” landscape as a collective female ritual of care, memory, and resilience, where voices and gestures transform the landscape into a space of ancestral connection.

Seven monitors simultaneously project the Lumière brothers’ films inside their villa-museum in Lyon. Through a feverish camera movement and dissolving focus, the work becomes a physical confrontation with the very origin of cinema.
